Canny commuters have found simple ways to avoid the high cost of catching the train to Sydney airport.

With the cost of catching the train into Sydney Domestic or International Airport costing from $13.80 one way, travellers are keen to cut corners.

Travellers can save more than $10 per journey by catching the train to Mascot Station, one stop before Sydney Domestic, before walking the 1.7 kilometre distance to the airport. 

One Canadian tourist saved $13.55 by catching a train from Redfern to Banksia and then catching the 400 bus to the airport, according to Sydney Morning Herald. 

A group of four friends saved almost $35 by catching a train from Wollongong to Wolli Creek before catching an Uber for the rest of the journey.

Nifty commuters are parking their cars in nearby suburbs, like Mascot or Botany, and catching an Uber for the remainder of the journey.

This can cost about $9 depending on travel times.

The airport train service is the most expensive throughout Sydney's rail network where the NSW government collects almost $90 million a year from airport train station fees, according to the publication.
