A strange notice spotted by a Brisbane resident and posted to social media on Sunday has elicited confusion and amusement from Reddit users.

'Notice: Thank you for noticing this new notice,' the sign reads. 'Your noticing it has been noted, and will be reported to the authorities.'

But the bizarre sign is actually a part of the Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm, and was erected in 2001 as part of a series of eight 'road signs as art'.

'Notice: Thank you for noticing this new notice,' the sign says. 'Your noticing it has been noted.'

Artist Richard Tipping, who describes his work as 'concrete poetry', is well-known in Australia for his unique commentary on Australian signage and public space.

His manipulated road signs are the most famous example of urban commentary, with this one making the point that notices exist purely to be noticed - even if they don't say anything that is worth the time and effort of reading.

Commenters on Reddit have jumped on the bandwagon, suggesting more lines that could be added to the bizarre sign.

'Failure to notice this sign will result in a $220 fine,' added one person, while another quipped: 'If you notice this notice, you'll notice this notice is not worth noticing.'

Another commenter who saw the sign in situ, wrote: 'I guess I'm ignoring the many signs in our lives - this was possibly a comment on that very thing, given the location at this wonderful conversion of a utility building to an arts and entertainment space.'

There are several other signs by Tipping scattered around the Brisbane Powerhouse.
