Officers were responding to a 911 call with women screaming in the background in Clinton, Missouri

During the call two women were heard screaming in the background, the Kansas City Star reported.

Officers arrived at the home at 9:25 p.m. and were fired on as they entered with the shooter then retreating inside, Lowe said.

The injured officer were taken away from the scene and the Missouri Highway Patrol arrived to help.

The shooter then barricaded himself in the house and highway patrol swat team then stormed the house at 12:10 a.m.

Lowe said it was unclear whether officers killed the suspect or whether he killed himself nor was it clear what happened to the woman who made the call.

According to Morton's Facebook page, the officer graduated from Knob Noster, High School, he attended the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and served in the National Guard as well as the US Army.

Officer Morton’s death is the second to have hit the Clinton Police Department in less than a year.

In August Officer Gary Michael, 37, had pulled over a vehicle for a suspected registration violation when he was shot dead.

The suspect in last year's incident was captured and charged with one count of first-degree murder, and one count of armed criminal action, both felonies.
