A sick electrician caught sharing vile images of children and babies being sexually abused has been spared jail.

The Gold Coast man, 32, walked free from Southport District Court despite pleading guilty to sharing almost 40 child exploitation images online.

Judge David Kent sentenced the man, who cannot be named, to two years in jail but released him on payment of a $1000 good behaviour bond.

'The material is serious in nature and some of the victims are babies,' Judge Kent said, but decided the man was not likely to reoffend, The Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

The court heard the electrician was caught by police sharing the images in Skype conversations.

He pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to share and access child exploitation material and one count of possessing child pornography.

The man had previous been caught by police with almost 1500 child porn images on his laptop.

Judge Kent viewed the man's medical records, and heard he had been getting physiological treatment for the past year.

The man was sexually abused as a child, and it was not alleged he made a profit from sharing the images, which were in the two highest categories of child porn.
