From Adele's 25 to Game of Thrones: 2015's bestsellers on iTunes revealed – and Periscope is the iPhone app of the year

If you own an iPhone or iPad, chances are you downloaded the WhatsApp Messenger app and may have watched an episode of Game of Thrones this year.

Apple has revealed the most popular music, apps, TV shows, films, books and podcasts across its iTunes, App and iBooks stores.

Live video streaming app, Periscope, was named iPhone 'App of the Year' and you may not be surprised to learn that Adele's 25 was the most downloaded album in the UK and the US.

Game of Thrones season five was the most popular TV show on both continents.

In the US, The Walking Dead season six and Downton Abbey season five were the next most-downloaded programmes for iPhone and iPad users to watch.

In the UK, the best-selling film was Kingsman: The Secret Service, staring Colin Firth, followed by The Imitation Game, while US App Store users plumped for Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection, followed by Big Hero 6.

For UK-based music-lovers, Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson was the bestselling song, followed by Omi's Cheerleader and Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do.

Adele's 25 was the bestselling album, followed by Now That's What I Call Music 90 and X by Ed Sheeran.

And Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, James Bay, Hozier and George Ezra were also in the top 10 best-sellers.

In the US, Uptown Funk was also the best-selling song, with Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud and Wiz Khalifa's See You Again coming in second and third place.

Just as in the UK, Adele took the top spot in the album chart, but this time was followed by Drake and Taylor Swift, with titles If You're Reading This It's Too Late and 1989, respectively.

Just as with Google's Play round-up, EL James' racy novel Grey, which is part of the 50 Shades series, was the most popular book sold on the App Store during 2015 in the UK.

Apps fostering shared experiences topped this year's most downloaded lists including Trivia Crack, SnapChat, and Heads Up! while Periscope was named by App Store editors as iPhone App of the Year, Apple said.

The most popular free iPhone apps in the UK over 2015 were: WhatsApp, Dubsmash and Messenger, while in the UK they were: Trivia Crack, Messenger (Facebook) and Dubsmash video app.

In both the UK and the US, the most popular paid-for iPad app was Minecraft: Pocket Edition, proving the enduring popularity of the pixelated game
