Pakistan vs England - Recap: Joe Root helps England to 130-3 at close of day four of second Test with Pakistan 361 ahead
- Yousif Khan makes 118 and Asad Shafiq makes half century
- Pakistan declare on 354-6 just after lunch and leave England chains 491
- Moeen Ali caught in slips on 1 and Alastair Cook caught on 10
- Joe Root makes 59 as England finish day four on 130-3
- Root and Jonny Bairstow at crease with England 361 behind
- Series is currently level after the first Test was drawn in Abu Dhabi
The last thing England needed as they began their unlikely quest for survival was the sight of Alastair Cook looking as if he was running through sand outside the Dubai Stadium rather than on the expanse of green within it.
A target of 491 or, a little more feasibly, four and a half sessions to survive, was difficult enough in this second Test without the England captain seemingly struggling with a groin injury that hampered and then cut short his contribution.
England’s attempt at making history and beating Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, which suddenly looked possible when they came within a whisker of winning the first Test, now appears to be crumbling around them.
While Joe Root remains there is still a faint hope for England and they will go into the final day with seven wickets left and needing the small matter of another 361 to pull off a world record chase.
Yet they are far more likely to go one down some time on Monday and then face an anxious wait to see if the one man who seems capable in this England side of batting long and big in Asia is fit for the third Test in Sharjah.
The official line is that England have ‘no concerns’ about Cook and with five days before the final match in this three-Test series there is a little more time than usual in the packed international calendar for the captain to recover.
But it was painful enough to watch Cook bat let alone for the captain to actually do it as he hobbled his way through 22 balls before falling when his body restricted his attempt to execute his first sweep shot.
That left England 19 for two after another dismissal that was painful for different reasons because it emphasised that their search for an opener to finally replace Andrew Strauss and partner Cook remains their biggest problem.
England want Moeen Ali to play his natural attacking game at the top of the order but surely they do not want him to flash wildly at a wide delivery with the new ball less than five overs old and edge to second slip. A balance is required.
The failure of Moeen so far to prove the perfect foil for Cook provides England with a headache ahead of a third Test that they will now have to win because he is integral to the balance of the team, at least in these conditions.
Moeen has to open if England are to include a second spinner in Adil Rashid and England coach Trevor Bayliss is determined for the leg-spinner to have a proper chance even if he again looked far from the finished article here.
Then there is the dilemma of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler who will surely need to make a match-saving contribution on the final day if he is not to be taken out of the firing line following a grim run of form in his ‘least natural’ format.
Selection issues can wait another day but for now England will be pleased with the way their bowlers stuck at their task as Pakistan batted their way towards a declaration and then with how Root at least responded to a crisis.
Once Misbah-ul-Haq had again fallen without adding to his overnight score, this time to Jimmy Anderson, Pakistan were slowed down to the point where their captain felt he had to go beyond lunch before calling it a day.
By then Younis Khan had gone to his 31st Test hundred and England’s spinners had proved a far easier proposition for the Pakistan batsmen than the seamers. Far from spin being the key here perhaps England should contemplate an extra pace bowler even though the Sharjah pitch could be the biggest turner.
Ian Bell’s experience was desperately needed by England when he walked out at Cook’s dismissal and for a while he batted as well as he has done at any time since his century in Antigua 20 long and largely barren innings ago.
Yet, after he had done much of the hard work in adding 102 with Root, Bell fell on review for 46 when technology showed that he had gloved an attempted leave off Zulfiqar Babar through to slip rather than deflected it with his forearm.
At least Root remained to the close with yet another half century and will resume on 59 alongside Jonny Bairstow on the final day. Much depends on the two Yorkshiremen now.
England batted for 141 overs to save a Test against South Africa in Cape Town in 2009 and then 143 to escape in Auckland two years ago but they will have to survive for 144 if they are going to repeat the trick here.
That represents the stiffest of tasks even if the Dubai surface has not broken up quite as rapidly as seemed likely. If England are to do it one batsman will have to bat all day on Monday. That man will almost certainly have to be Root.
That's the end of today's play. England 361 behind, seven wickets left, they'd have taken this when Pakistan declared on 354 shortly after lunch.
Pakistan still very much in the driving seat but England have a chance tomorrow if Root and Bairstow can stay there.
Yasir to Bairstow. Not the most convincing, but he survives.
England still have it all to do tomorrow.
It's tense out there. One run scored by England in the last 36 balls. Another maiden for Zulfiqar bowling to Root.
Just one over left!
Yasir to Bairstow. Same again. Two overs until stumps.
Zulfiqar to Root who defends. England aren't playing any games here. They have three overs more to survive.
Joe Root picks up a single from Yasir.
Zulfiqar to Bairstow, who leaves one that doesn't spin and is an inch or two away from hitting off-stump.
Joe Root is just putting his pad in the way out there as Yasir keeps pitching outside his leg stump. The leg spinner changes it up to make Root play. It's a good contest out there.
It's tough for Bairstow out there. Coming in with spin at both ends. He survives another good over from Zulfiqar.
Just a couple off Yasir. It's the Yorkshire boys at the crease again for England, just as it was at the start of day three. They didn't last long then, they'll need to do better this time around if England are to even get close to saving this match.
Finally Pakistan have their breakthrough. Zulfiqar gets some bounce and it does for Bell.
Bairstow comes in and slaps one for four.
Just when England were starting to dream, Bell is caught. Pad, then glove, off Zulfiqar for 46. A good review from Pakistan.
Zulfiqar thinks the ball spun off the pad of Ian Bell and hit his glove, umpire disagrees. We have a review.
Root reaches 50 and then it's the 100 partnership up after Yasir's spin and bounce beats the keeper again.
Even if England lose this match, at least this partnership is a positive they can point to. Particularly for Ian Bell.
10 off the over.
Important innings from Joe Root who goes to his half century with a thick edge. Yet again he is the man scoring runs for England.
Zulfiqar goes for two.
This partnership has lasted nearly 200 deliveries for England now, which is far more important than the runs that have been scored.
Yasir is back into the attack and he beats keeper with spin and bounce. England run in three extras.
Zulfiqar gets one to strighten and fizzes it past Root's outside edge, a reminder of what this pitch has in it. Just a single from the over.
Root gets Wahab away for four to bring up the 100 for England. How long will the light last today. This time it will be England who are hoping the umpires stop things early.
I was just thinking we haven't had a boundary for a while. Lovely square drive off the back-foot from Root.
Both batsmen closing in on 50 as England have recovered from those two early wickets. Just two off of Zulfiqar.
Bell gets an inside edge from Wahab first ball back after drinks and it misses the stumps by a whisker. He gets his bat out of the way of the next one but the interval seems to have done Wahab some good.
Root had a go at Wahab for kicking the ball along the ground at drinks break and the bowler thinks he has his man even though the ball was clearly played into the ground before it was caught in the slips.
Wahab looking dangerous though as he ups his pace to 145kmph
Time for a drinks break... will England's batsmen keep their concentration.
Zulfiqar comes back in for Shoaib Malik, no sign of the return of Yasir though, who was so lethal alongside Wahab in England's first innings.
Root and Bell pick up a single each.
Bell does well to get his bat out of the way from a short one from Wahab just wide of his off-stump. Just one from the over.
The off-spinner Malik continues, Bell rotates the stirke by flicking a single off of his pads.
Root then cuts the ball nicely to run three more.
England have cut the lead to less than 400 runs now, which is something...
Wahab to Root. His pace has dropped from his excellent spell yesterday.
A couple of twos for Bell off the bowling of Shoaib Malik.
A change of pace is provided by Wahab, who keeps it tight in his first over. We can only assume Wahab has already won Pakistan this test match, but a wicket from him before stumps would go a long way to securing it.
Just as you were wondering where the danger was, Shoaib gets one to drift a breatdth from Ian Bell's bat.
Other than that though the England Batsmen have looked comfortable against the spin, but here comes Wahab who dismissed Root in the first innings.
Zulfiqar gets Bell to edge one onto his pad but the ball dies with catchers in close waiting.
Route gets four and then runs three off two loose deliveries from Shoaib Malik.
Joe Root with a delicate back-cut off Shoaib
Another maiden from Zulfiqar who bowls to Bell, but it doen't really matter, it's wickets not runs that really count now.
A single from Bell brings up the 50 partnership. England need these two to reach three figures and keep going. Shoaib Malik is the bowler. Malik goes around the wicket and Root gets an inside edge which rolls safe.
Zulfiqar continues and reigns England in after an expensive one from Yasir.
Root defends well, again.
Both Bell and Root are enjoying the cut shot against Yasir but your heart is in your mouth every time thinking they might get an inside edge.
After cutting one for four Bell slashes another to the boundary through the leg side.
Ian Bell hits another boundary, this time another short one from Yasir is slashed into the leg-side.
Another cut shot from Ian Bell of Yasir Shah goes perfectly square and reaches the boundary.
Root hits Zulfiqar for four square and then sweeps him to pick up two more.
Joe Root cuts Zulfiqar away, Hafeez should have stopped it but it dribbles over him and the boundary rope.
Yasir is getting some turn out there but Root handles it well, he gets a single off the last ball of the over.
Bell gets an inside edge on to his pad which rasies a few screams around the bat. He then punches it into the off-side for two.
Well bowled again from Zulfiqar.
Yasir to Root, who plays the spin well but can't find a run.
Concentration is key here for England facing two spinners, Zulfiqar puts in a good over again.
A cut shot from Ian Bell is just stopped at the boundary rope and England run three. Root follows suit next ball and cuts Yasir to bring up the 50 with two more.
Zulfiqar gets the final session of the day under way. Joe Root and Ian Bell are going to be facing a lot of spin as the light fades in Dubai.
Just a single for Ian Bell from that over.
England’s problems piled up on the fourth day of the second Test when Alastair Cook suffered an injury that puts his place in the third Test in doubt.
As if England were not in enough trouble after Pakistan finally declared 30 minutes after lunch to set a massive victory target of 491, their captain suffered a groin injury which severely hampered him in his all too short second innings.
Suddenly this demanding mission to the United Arab Emirates is turning into a nightmare for England who lost two wickets before tea and look set for an inevitable defeat here either later today or tomorrow.
It soon became clear that Cook was struggling when England began their unlikely survival attempt but it was Moeen Ali who fell first to an awful drive at a wide ball from Imran Khan. England’s long search to find an opener to partner Cook goes on.
The captain did not have too much trouble playing the seamers but as soon as leg-spinner Yasir Shah was brought into the attack it was only a matter of time before Cook fell. His demise came to the first sweep he attempted.
At least Ian Bell and Joe Root got England through to tea on 45 for two but they will have to still be there at the close for England to have any chance of getting out of this mess still all square with only next week’s third Test to come.
The first session of the day was as big an exercise in futility as it is possible for Test cricket to be. England spent this morning just treading water and trying to delay for as long as possible their inevitable scrap for safety.
They did all they could. The seamers have bowled really well throughout this series and could be forgiven for the apparent grumpiness displayed by Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes in being out there again so soon after the first innings.
England struck an early blow when Misbah-ul-Haq again failed to add to his overnight score, as he did in the first innings, and could not make his second century of the Test after holing out to a Jimmy Anderson off-cutter.
But there was nothing England could do to score Younis Khan, who had passed 9,000 Test runs on the third evening, from moving on to his third century against England his 31st in all in Test cricket. A fantastic record.
The seamers again kept things pretty tight as they waited for Pakistan’s inevitable declaration but it was harder for the spinners to keep a lid on the Pakistan scoring even though there was increasingly assistance for them.
Adil Rashid turned the ball more than in the first innings – Yasir Shah didn't mind seeing that – but there was again too many loose deliveries as he continues to struggle to reproduce his Yorkshire form at the highest level.
England want to be patient with Rashid. He is only in his second Test and he is bowling at accomplished players of spin in conditions they excel in but he has a long way to go to justify a regular place in this England team.
At least Rashid was able to claim the wicket of Younis, who tried to slog him and was well caught by Moeen, before the off-spinner’s dismissal of Asad Shafiq finally brought a declaration from Misbah.
Root flicks one into the gap on the leg-side for two, he then tries to cut Yasir off the back foot but doesn't connect cleanly.
Good over from Zulfiqar bowling to Bell who defends with trouble. One more over before tea...
Shoaib was just being used to give Yasir a change of ends. The leg-spinner is animated out there. Another Pakistan misfield gives England an extra run. Just two from the over.
Zulfiqar is the man bowling the spin now, Bell gets an outside edge but it runs past Yousif Khan and England run two.
Shoaib Malik to bowl some offspin, a little appeal as bell comes down the pitch and the ball goes pad... glove.. and lands in front of short leg.
An overthrow from Afeez gives England their fourth boundary of the day.
Slow down England... Another boundary, this time for Bell. You always feel like a wicket is just around the corner though.
Bell leans back and cuts Yasir square, lovely shot.
Imran to Bell, who pulls away for a single down to third-man.
Root then hits four to get off the mark.
Root off the mark with a lovely backward slice down between square and third-man.
Yasir strikes and you can't help but feel he will be the one that does for England before the end of today.
A big appeal for lbw on Joe Root to end the over, not sure why, pitched and hit outside of leg.
It was always going to be playing the spinners that Alastair Cook had trouble with when he was so clearly struggling with injury. His first sweep was his downfall.
Nothing else the captain could do really. He now has six days to recover in time for the third Test in Sharjah. The longevity of England's innings will all be down to Joe Root now.
The England captain tried to sweep Yasir towards square leg but gets a top-edge and is caught easily.
Imran gets one past the bat that doesn't carry to Sarfraz and is fumbled to give the England a single.
Bell plays a lovely drive into the onside for his first boundary.
Ian Bell drives Imran through the covers for England's first boundary.
It was Graeme Swann who said that Alastair Cook ran like Woody from Toy Story. Well, never has that been more true than today. It really is painful to watch him so goodness knows what it must be like for Cook.
But he's a tough so and so as we know and he will do his utmost to stay out there. Meanwhile my principle of not saying anything nice about an England batsman while they are in because it always curses them means I'm not going to say anything about how well Ian Bell has started.
Both sides take on some fluids.
Here comes the spin... Yasir comes into the attack with the ball just seven overs old.
Cooks squeezes him for a single.
Imran has bell in trouble on the penultimate delivery as the ball moves off the pitch and shoots up off his bat and on to his glove.
Just one from the over.
England add two. They could really do with an innings from out of form Bell. Cook, ambling between the wickets, embodies England's position in this Test match.
Imran to Cook, who limps through for a single... Bumble reckons he has a groin strain.
Disappointing end for Moeen Ali, will he open again for the last Test match?
Caught by Younis Khan in the slips. Imran is given a warning for following through onto the middle of the pitch.
Oh Mo! That's awful. What a terrible way to get out when you are trying to save the game. Yes I know all about this positive attitude and I know how well it worked against Australia.
But honestly. Not here. Not know. The England's opener's position remains as hard to fill as ever it seems. And here comes a man for a crisis - Ian Bell
Moeen Ali gives his wicket away flashing at a wide one... he must have thought England were actually going for the run chase... caught of the bowling of Imran in the slips.
Cook swats Wahab away for a single first up. That's it for the over.
Imran looks to set Moeen Ali up lbw but he gets a bat on it comfortably. Not too bad this batting lark... England only need 484 more runs...
Wahab, who did for England yesterday has the ball in his hand again, Moeen Ali will be hoping to hang around until the spinners are on, and gets himself off the mark with a single.
Rotating the strike will keep Pakistan on their toes at least...
Cook then shifts his weight beautifully to flick the ball into the leg-side, but he looks laboured running. Get a runner on?
The faint yet rousing sound of Jerusalem seeps from the sounds again as England come in to bat.
Imran Khan to Cook, who times a defensive shot on the front foot for two.
Cook then deflects one towards third man for two more. Imran is told to watch his follow through and changes his entry point.
It looks like a lost cause and Alastair Cook seems to have hurt his back, but the captain and Moeen Ali will be out shortly to try and save this Test match...
How selfish is that for Asad Shafiq to request a review? Surely that's just wasting time for Pakistan?
It doesn't matter now surely other than for personal reasons. Anyway he's out and there's the declaration at last. One mountain for England to try to climb.
Pakistan have declared and England will now try to save this Test match... good luck boys.
Shafiq reviews, perhaps thinking he was hit outside the line. Misbah is shuffling around as if he wants to declare. It's given out.
It would that Alastair Cook, who is just about England's only hope of getting out of this Test with a draw, is injured.
He's either feeling his back or his groin and left the field recently for some painkillers, it seems. Other than that things are going really well…
Will England bother with the new ball or just keep on spinning? Is there any point...
Another over from Rashid, five added.
Pakistan continue to up the pace despite the wicket of Yousif.
Shafiq comes down the wicket and smashes over wide long-on, one bounce, four.
Some joy for Rashid as Younis is caught well by Moeen trying to slog. He then thinks he has Shafiq but a review bares no fruit for England.
Rashid thinks he's got Shafiq next ball but is deceived by the extent of his own turn. The batsman hit his boot and the floor as the ball ripped off the pitch from leg stump all the way to Anderson at slip.
Not out...
That's a good catch from Moeen Ali. Well done him for making sure he didn't lose focus there and drop that one.
Another Test wicket will mean something to Adil Rashid even if it only just improves his figures. Can't see why Pakistan are batting on now. Enough already!
Younis goes for a big slog off Rashid and Moeen Ali is under it to take the catch. Younis goes for 118, an excellent innings.
Pakistan are upping their run rate, a couple of boundaries from Shafiq and a no-ball from Wood help them on their way.
Another boundary from Shafiq, this time he drives Wood straight and the fielder can only slow the ball down a little on its way to the rope.
Shafiq cuts Wood away off the back foot to bring up the 100 partnership.
Rashid continues where he left off before lunch. Pakistan take the lead to over 450 as Shafiq reaches his 50.
Younis runs down the track and drives the ball right back where it came from for four.
A single off Rashid takes Shafiq to his 13th test 50
Here we go again...
Wood's off to a lively start as Younis tries to flick a straight one off his leds but it hits him on the pad. A faint inside edge saves the bastman. A couple of singles and then Wood has Younis playing and missing.
Surely it can't be long until Pakistan declare?
They're nearly 450 ahead, but with more than a day and a half to go and the pitch starting to offer more and more to the spinners - they're probably not too worried about being able to bowl England out.
Yousif doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, and Shafiq is looking very comfortable as well.
Hopefully we'll see Pakistan play a little more aggressively and then put England out in the field soon.
This was as big an exercise in futility as it is possible for Test cricket to be. England spent this morning just treading water and trying to delay for as long as possible their inevitable scrap for safety in this second Test.
They do all they could.
Adil Rashid turned the ball more than in the first innings – Yasir Shah won’t mind seeing that – but there was again too many loose deliveries as he continues to struggle to reproduce his Yorkshire form at the highest level.
England want to be patient with Rashid. He is only in his second Test and he is bowling at accomplished players of spin in conditions they excel in but he has a long way to go to justify a regular place in this England team.
By lunch Younis had moved on to 112 and with support from Asad Shafiq (47) Pakistan were 311 for four, the small matter of 447 ahead, and the only question was how long they would go on before trying to bowl England out in the remainder of today and tomorrow. Their moment of truth should come soon after lunch.
Last over before lunch from Rashid, things can only get better after the break surely.
Pakistan lead by 447...
Big lbw appeal from Moeen but it hits Shafiq outside the line. England use an appeal but the umpire's decision is upheld.
Shafiq is still there and nearing his half-century. England trail by 444.
Just a single a piece off of Rashid.
Moeen Ali comes into the attack for England now. Shaiq shows some lovely touches with a fine paddle shot and then a reverse sweep.Younis then smashes Moeen for four, a tough welcome to the attack for him.
Younis Khan skips down the track and smashes it for four over the top into the leg side.
Brilliant innings from Younis, a very patient innings from 193 balls.
Younis is searching for his 100, he's only been out once in the 90s and shits across his stumps agains to find the boundary on the leg-side.
Younis comes across his stumps to flick the ball behind for four more, two away from his 100...
The good news is that Adil Rashid is turning it on day four. The bad news is that Yasir Shah will probably turn it more - and that Rashid is still bowling too many loose balls.
Guess we have to be patient. He's only in his second Test. But he's an experienced bowler now with over 400 first-class wickets for Yorkshire.
He showed what he could do by cleaning up the tail in Abu Dhabi in the second innings but England need more from him if he is going to become, as Trevor Bayliss wants him to be, a regular member of this England side.
Rashid is punished for bowling too short as Shafiq smashes the ball to the boundary rope.
A short one from Rashid is pulled away by Shafiq for four.
Broad is looking to bowl well wide of off-stump and in response Younis shuffles across to meet the ball and rotate the strike as he creeps towards his 100.
A misfield at third man allows Shafiq to pick up two more.
Rashid's first ball nips off the pitch and is edged just short of Jimmy Anderson at slip.
Younis then plays and misses. Two from the over.
New ball available but a decent over from Rashid there should delay its use.
A good over from Stuart Broad, Shafiq hesitates on a drive and the ball loops up and just falls short of Cook at mid-off. Broad's cutters are showing some promise on this pitch.
One over until the new ball is available.
Adil Rashid is coming in to replace Ben Stokes.
Two fours from Shafiq take the lead to 405, it's looking like it will be Pakistan who decide when this innings ends.
And he does it again on the next ball, toying with mid-off who had come straighter following the previous boundary.
A gorgeous drive from Shafiq brings up the 400 lead.
Stuart Broad comes into the attack and it's a lively over. An inside edge from Younis misses the stumps and runs away for four.
The Younis cuts one for four beautifully, but the next ball Broad is mightly close to the edge of the veteran's bat. There's some movement in this deteriorating pitch.
Nothing lucky about this one from Younis as he comes out of his crease and cuts the ball away to move into the 90s.
Stuart Broad comes into the attack, and his first delivery is an inside edge from Younis that just misses the stumps and runs away for four.
Entertainment value has clearly dropped as Sky are now replaying Ben Stokes' reactions from yesterday's play...
A maiden for the all-rounder.
This is starting to look like the patient Pakistan we saw yesterday afternoon, won't make for the best viewing but they know they have time, runs and wickets on their side...
Just a single from Shafiq down to third man as Anderson is still going out there.
This many overs into the first session of this innings England had used five bowlers.
Stokes is worked into the leg-side for a single, and then for two more. The lead is now 388.
This game is just treading water now. Pakistan appear in no real hurry but I guess there's plenty of time left and the one thing you do know about Dubai is that it is not going to rain!
Meanwhile Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes are trying to see if they can out-grump each other at having to bowl lots of overs in this heat on a flat deck again. England have mucked this up good and proper…
Younis looks to drive Anderson from the first two balls but can't catch it cleanly, scuffing the ball to the fielder both times. How long until we see some spin?
Younis gives Shafiq the strike with a single from he first ball and the newer batsmen creams Stokes into the off-side for four.
Asad Shafiq drives Stokes through the off-side for a boundary.
Younis Khan moves onto 1,000 career runs against England, flicking one for three off of his toes. 79 in this innings as Anderson continues his opening spell.
Misbah then gets two, again Anderson worked onto the leg-side.
Ben Stokes into the attack, deserved a wicket yesterday, what can he do here?
Shafiq nudges down to third man for two from the opening ball and then manages to squeeze a single as a drive is half stopped in the covers.
Just two off Anderson... 137 is apparently the highest successful Test match run chase at the Dubai Cricket Stadium...
Shafiq squeezes a single off of Wood, and Younis manages the same. Shafiq then flicks Wood away fine for his first boundary of the innings.
Shafiq gets his first boundary of the day, glancing the ball fine for four off Wood.
Just a single off Anderson this time, the England bowler with very efficient figures in this innings of 2-13.
This is a good start from England, four runs and a wicket as Wood finishes off the fifth over of the day. Pakistan lead by 362 though...
And Misbah's bid for his second century of the Test comes to an end.
An off-cutter from Jimmy Anderson has done for him there and he goes without adding to his overnight sore, just as the Pakistan captain did in the first innings.
A good start to the day for England.
Misbah doesn't add to his overnight score, caught at mid off by Cook, Anderson the bowler.
Younis squeezes a single from Wood who opens the bowling rather than Broad today, on the back of yesterday's success.
Good morning from Dubai where England have it all to do at the start of the fourth day of this second Test. Yesterday really was miserable for England.
All that hard work of the first seven days of the series thrown away in a session of madness on the third morning.
It's very hard to see them getting out of this now because the pitch will break out a lot more than Abu Dhabi but you never know.
For now we are just seeing how long Pakistan will bat on for. Mishah-ul-Haq is closing in on his second century of the Test and Younis Khan is not far behind him.
It's a question for England of keeping it as tight as possible and trying to delay Misbah's declaration. I reckon they will try to have 20 minutes at England before lunch but let's see how cautious Misbah will be.
All the hard work of seven long days in the heat of the United Arab Emirates was thrown away by England in two hours of batting madness that threatens to cost them this second Test and their chance of making history here against Pakistan.
A miserable collapse that saw England lose five wickets for 17 runs and then their last seven for 36 handed Pakistan a first innings lead of 136 which they extended to 358 as a weary attack struggled to make amends for the batsmen.
England then failed to kick on from a good start in the field as Misbah Ul-Haq and Younis Khan put on a partnership of 139 to take the game away from the tourists and leave Pakistan on the brink of victory.
Follow all the action on day four of the second Test here with updates from Sportsmail's Paul Newman in Dubai.
