Bayern Munich chief condemns Thomas Tuchel for 'unwise statements' about their squad depth - as he insists it is isn't 'too thin' to compete after boss' pleas to strengthen in January

Bayern Munich's honorary president, Uli Hoeness, has hit back at Thomas Tuchel's public criticisms over the club's transfer business during the summer.

Tuchel arrived at Bayern less than six months ago when he replaced Julian Nagelsmann, but has already tested the patience of his new bosses, particularly during the summer transfer window.

The German giants managed to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham for £100million, but Tuchel also wanted Declan Rice before he moved to Arsenal, Manchester City's Kyle Walker, and was frustrated that the club missed out on Fulham's Joao Palhinha on deadline day.

Bayern chiefs were unimpressed by Tuchel's 'erratic' conduct following the failed transfers, and reportedly called him in for a secret meeting earlier this month. 

And now, the club's honorary president has gone public with his criticisms of Tuchel and the 'unwise statements' which were made in summer.

According to NTV, Bayern chief Hoeness said: 'Those statements are a feast for the media, especially the tabloids.

'Some, including the coach, made unwise statements, because I shouldn't make my own team look bad by saying our squad is too thin. We don't have a thin squad'.

After their 2-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in September, Tuchel told reporters: 'The squad is a bit thin, a bit small. We have six trained defensive players for a four-man chain, which is perfect.' 

While Bayern have made a positive start to their Bundesliga campaign, after picking up 17 points from a possible 21, the club still find themselves sat in third. 

Hoeness went on to suggest that the club are open to bolstering their squad depth in January, amid their title charge, but also said they would not sign players for the 'sake of it'. 

'If we feel that we need additions by then, we will do so. We can't always just make sure that we live in the here and now, but that this club should be healthy for the next 10 years,' Hoeness explained.

It was revealed last month that Bayern bosses have reportedly grown irritated with Tuchel over his 'erratic' behaviour during the summer window.

One frustration they had was Tuchel's push to sign Rice, when they felt Kane was the priority.

It would have been unlikely for the club to sign both players, with Rice costing Arsenal even more than his England team-mate.

Bayern's transfer committee felt that signing a No 6 was more important to Tuchel than a striker but after landing Kane, they accepted his demands and pushed for Palhinha after the manager's public demands. 

The German club put in an initial offer of £47m though this was subsequently rejected by Fulham, who priced him at £90m initially.

The Bavarian side are currently unbeaten in the Bundesliga, but lie in third place, a point behind Stuttgart and two off Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.
