Sunderland fear another lengthy lay-off for David Meyler after midfielder's latest knee injury
Sunderland fear David Meyler has suffered another serious injury just five games into his comeback from a career-threatening knee injury.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder was stretchered off at Villa Park on Wednesday night in agony and Sunderland are now awaiting news of his scan amid fears he has suffered serious knee ligament damage.
Last night the 21-year-old sent out a message on Twitter, thanking fans for their support and vowing: 'I’ll be back, don’t you worry!'
Meyler was out for six months after snapping anterior ligaments against Manchester United at the end of last season but stunned doctors with the speed of his recovery.
Injury woe: Meyler
He returned before Christmas, a month ahead of schedule, and looked set for a fresh run in Steve Bruce’s side in the absence of captain Lee Cattermole, who faces a month on the sidelines with a back injury.
Bruce has now recalled young midfielder Jack Colback from his loan spell at Ipswich and, with Bolo Zenden suspended following his dismissal at Aston Villa in midweek, he is likely to go straight into the side to face Notts County in the FA Cup third round tomorrow.
Bruce is ready to hijack Steve Sidwell’s move from Aston Villa to Wolves as cover for Meyler, in case the Irishman’s season is over.
The Sunderland boss has also cancelled Asamoah Gyan’s holiday with his family in Africa.
The club record signing was told he could return to Ghana after an arduous Christmas but Bruce has told the striker to forget his winter break because he too is needed for the cup tie with striker Danny Welbeck also struggling to be fit tomorrow.
