There were people here who had travelled from New York, from India, to see a special, important match. A long way to come for this, that. To be fair, Salford was barely worth the trek.
Yes, there are derbies with less quality, but they tend to involve donkeys, not the elite of the English game. It was a match that brought back memories of United’s encounter with Chelsea at the start of David Moyes’ brief reign. Jose Mourinho played without a striker and United may as well have.
Roy Hodgson said he really enjoyed the game. He was here too. Maybe his take on an enjoyable 90 minutes has changed since then, however, as he was gone long before the end.

It's going to take weeks to get over how bad that Manchester derby was, but I have a remedy for you.
Click on the above link to watch live coverage of the day's final game as Liverpool host Southampton at Anfield. At the very least it cannot be as bad as this! I'll see you there.
90min: There will be three added minutes at Old Trafford. All of a sudden this game has become very tense as both sides attempt to snatch a winner. I just wish they bothered for the first 80 minutes...
89min: Just a minute to play and Morgan Schneiderlin collects a yellow card for a foul on Kevin de Bruyne.
88min: Top save from Hart! It's about time this derby came to life and the City stopper dives down low and quick to his left to punch behind a low Chris Smalling effort.
85min: Off the bar! That's more like it! A high ball into the box finds Lingard's whose poked volley beats Joe Hart but not the woodwork.
83min: Final change for Manchester City too as Kelechi Iheanacho replaces Wilfried Bony.
Wait! We have a shot on target as Jesus Navas forces David de Gea into a decent save! Hey, folks, it's a start!
81min: On more serious matters, Valencia's injury is indeed serious enough for him to limp off down the tunnel and he is replaced by Matteo Darmian.
80min: Have I got time to start a petition to get Mark Clattenburg to blow up for full-time early?
This is brutal, even Antonio Valencia appears to have had enough as he takes a seat on the turf asking for treatment.
The big action does surround Clattenburg, he's run out of vanishing spray. Pure drama...
77min: Just 13 minutes left and I'm not over exaggerating in saying this could be the worst Manchester derby I have ever seen.
Still no shots on target as Yaya Toure departs in favour of Martin Demichelis... not exactly a change which is going to encourage shots on goal for the visitors.
75min: Another change for Manchester United, who are looking to go more direct as Marouane Fellaini replaces Bastian Schweinsteiger.
70min: We are past the point in the Manchester derby where it could ever be considered a class but it's still United pressing for the opening goal.
It's hard to see where it will come from but the home fans are sticking with it - big chants of 'Louis van Gaal's red white army' echo around Old Trafford.
67min: Back to 'no shots' Manchester and it's a first change for United as Juan Mata is replaced by Jesse Lingard.
Goodness me Boruc is having a shocker! The keeper poorly parries a Toby Alderwiereld header into the path of Harry Kane, who stabs home from close range for his hat-trick.
That's the tenth goal Bournemouth have conceded in two games...
'Tottenham fans to Bournemouth: 'You're going down with the Chelsea.''
63min: Pivotal from Joe Hart! Juan Mata is onside as he runs past the Manchester City defence on to a through ball, but Hart was very quick off his line to fumble the forward and clear to safety. Excellent sweeper keeping.
60min: One hour gone, and while we have five goals down at Bournemouth we have yet to see a shot on target (still) in the Manchester derby. United though are still looking the better side in this half.
Bournemouth started the half well enough, but they are now three behind! Harry Kane garbs his second goal of the game, running to prod a quite brilliant Christian Eriksen pass past Boruc.
55min: On comes Navas, as Raheem Sterling departs. De Bruyne will now attack down the left with the substitute on the right of City's attack as Pellegrini tinkers with his tactics.
54min: Manchester City have struggled since the break so Manuel Pellegrini is looking to make changes as Jesus Navas strips down ready to come on.
51min: Still no shots on target but Manchester United are showing much more threat! A corner loops to Chris Smalling at the far post, whose header across goal bounces ever so narrowly wide. I thought it was in!
50min: Does that count as a shot? Manchester United are the better team right now as the ball falls for Ander Herrera on the edge of the box, whose shot is blocked wide.
47min: We also back underway at Bournemouth, while at Old Trafford, Manchester United have come out attacking. Time to get that first shot on goal, chaps.
Tottenham are flying down at the Vitality Stadium, having recovered from Matt Ritchie's opener after 49 seconds to storm into a 3-1 lead.
It's far from over though, Bournemouth came back into the match near the end of the half and even struck the post seconds before the break through Josh King.
This one is worth keeping an eye on at the very least. I mean would you trust Spurs with a two-goal lead?

No shots on target is just poor all round, but there are still 45 minutes for this game to kick into life where the main talking point has been Wayne Rooney's head injury.
It's also worth noting this is the first time Manchester United haven't had a single shot on or off target at Old Trafford in the first half since Opta started recording statistics.

45+1min: More yellow cards than shots so far as Kompany is the latest player booked after bringing down Martial.
45min: Good opportunity for Man City, but it ends with us still waiting for a first shot on target.
Kevin de Bruyne charges with menace down the right but his low cross for Toure results in the midfielder scuffing well off target. Poor.
'Boruc is having an awful game. It might take a penalty save to get him above a 4 in my ratings later.'
Credit to Tottenham though. Since falling behind inside the first minute they have dominated events at the Vitality Stadium as we approach half-time on the south coast.
40min: That's just about our best chance of the match. Manchester City's corner falls to Yaya Toure at the back post, who out-jumps Morgan Schneiderlin to head just wide. We are still waiting for our first shot on target...
39min: Yellow card for Manchester as Juan Mata brings down Fernandinho, with the resulting free-kick deflecting wide for a corner.
36min: Ten minutes before the break, and we still look no closer to a chance let alone a shot. Rooney runs at the City defence before slipping in a through ball but Martial fails to read it as the pass runs out for a goal kick.
33min: Where's the communication? It sums up this game that a high hopeless ball is pumped into the United box, but under no pressure Phil Jones heads behind for a corner. David de Gea should have called for that but the hosts survive the set-piece.
Adam Federici had a horror show against Manchester City and Artur Boruc is fairing little better. The Bournemouth keeper fumbles a low cross from Harry Kane and on hand to tap home is Erik Lamela.
'United will be more than happy with the way this game has gone so far. They are winning some of their individual battles in the City half of the field and are drawing fouls to win the free-kicks from which they know they can be dangerous.
'City, meanwhile, have only looked sporadically fluent on the break and have not yet managed to outnumber Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin enough.
'Bony has held the ball up reasonably well but City need more in the final third from Toure and Sterling.'
'It might not be a classic but it’s still shaping up to be a fascinating contest. United having more possession but City have shown in flashes that they have the individual talent to pounce at any moment.
'Van Gaal won’t be fooled into thinking his team are in the ascendancy here.'
24min: Wayne Rooney has just come off for a bit of treatment at Old Trafford and I'm not surprised, because he's just had a nasty clash of heads with Vincent Kompany. Blood and thunder but no goals at Old Trafford - yet.
21min: Meanwhile it's still cagey in Manchester, as neither side can take control of this first half. They need to borrow the philosophy from the game at the Vitality Stadium, which is basically no defenders allowed.
Now here's a rare goal. Mousa Dembele collects a deflected shot onside in the Bournemouth box before slipping as tucked a finish under Boruc.
It's just his second Premier League in just under two years as Spurs come from behind to lead.
15min: Already Clattenburg's consistency looks in tatters as Fernandinho is cautioned following a trip on Anthony Martial.
The teenager was just too quick for the midfielder but Toure's foul earlier looked much worse and was deliberate.
12min: Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Manchester City are starting to see more of the ball in attacking areas, with Raheem Sterling seeing a shot deflected wide after cutting inside from the left.
'Spurs seem to have woken up. Boruc clearly has not. Not sure why he felt the need to dive in there.'
'Perhaps an indication of City’s superior squad depth that they have come here missing arguably their best two players but still look very dangerous indeed, on paper at least.
'United, meanwhile, have a midfielder at full-back and a holding midfield duo that look a little vulnerable to the threat of YaYa Toure, playing just off Wilfried Bony.
'United, though, are a vastly more organised and cohesive team under Louis van Gaal than in recent times and will fancy themselves if they are still in the game after an hour.'
Christian Eriksen's through ball finds Harry Kane who is wiped out by Artur Boruc in the Bournemouth goal. The Tottenham striker dusts himself down to send the stopper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
'No surprise to see Memphis Depay left on the bench once again. He hasn’t been good enough recently, even though his exclusion and Ashley Young’s continued absence through injury somewhat forces Van Gaal into playing Anthony Martial out wide and Wayne Rooney as an out-and-out striker.
'More surprising is the inclusion of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who looked flat and one-paced before he was substituted at half-time in Moscow on Wednesday.
'It will be interesting to see how he copes against City’s speed.'
6min: Some rather lenient refereeing from Mark Clattenburg who decides not to book Yaya Toure following a fairly blatant push on Wayne Rooney to prevent a counter.
I wonder if he will try and keep his cards in his pocket throughout the match. We'll see...
3min: Over to you Manchester! Bournemouth have paved the way but we haven't even had a shot on goal at Old Trafford in a slow old start to the derby.
Wow, what a start! Matt Ritchie completely unmarked has picked up a cross at the far post and lashed home past Hugo Lloris after 48 seconds. Criminal defending from Spurs but Bournemouth are off to a flyer!

I know, I know. These have been around for a while now but I still cannot understand how these sell so well. I can't imagine any hardcore manchester City fan buying ANYTHING with a hint of Manchester Unite don it and vice-versa.
