Swindon Town consider former Torquay United boss Martin Ling as successor to Mark Cooper at County Ground

  • Martin Ling's last spell as a manager came in 2013 at Torquay United
  • Swindon finished fourth in League One last term losing in the play-off final
  • The Robins lost only one of their opening six at the start to this campaign
  • But a run of eight defeats in 10 games coincided with Cooper being sacked

Swindon Town are to consider appointing Martin Ling as their new manager.

The 49-year-old has been coaching at the Football Careers Centre and running his own soccer academy but last managed at Torquay United in 2013.

Ling admitted suffering from depression before being sacked by Torquay and has been scouting for Walsall. He had two spells as a player at Swindon making 150 appearances between 1991 and 1996.

The Robins will hope Ling can reproduce the results he achieved in gaining promotion to League One with Leyton Orient in the 2005-06 season, with Saturday's FA Cup First Round tie with Rochdale at Spotland potentially his first game in charge.

Ling spent 18 months as manager of Cambridge United between August 2009 and February 2011, but left the then Conference side claiming his CV was perhaps 'too big' for the club.

Swindon are in no need of any egos walking through the door at the County Ground, after a run of just one point from nine has seen them fall to second from bottom in League One.

Swindon, who sacked Mark Cooper as manager last month, are also bringing in 33-year-old Tottenham coach Ross Embleton to work alongside his friend and current first team coach Luke Williams.
