Peter Lovenkrands has been offered a take-it-or-leave-it deal to remain at Rangers. New manager Paul Le Guen - yet to arrive in Glasgow - is keen to retain the services of the Danish forward.
But Lovenkrands has been told his new boss wants a quick answer or he will move on to other targets.
Chairman David Murray told the Daily Record: "I have spoken to Peter on two occasions and have also held discussions with his agent. They have to realise we need a quick answer.
"If Peter doesn't feel he can stay then the manager has someone else in mind for his position.
"We would like Peter to stay but if not we will move to secure the other target.
"Everybody has to realise no one player is bigger than this club."
Le Guen also appears to have begun his summer clear-out, with reports this morning claiming Sotirios Kyrgiakos was summoned to Murray Park yesterday to be told he no longer has a future at Rangers.
But the new boss has already recruited the services of 18-year-old Chelsea starlet Dean Furman.
Chelsea assistant Stevie Clarke said: "Obviously it's a big step up from the youth teams at Chelsea to the first team but the lad has a lot of ability.
"We wish him every success at Rangers."
