He has earned plaudits for his innovative coaching methods and has been compared with other top young European coaches such as Julian Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim. Now he is keen to make a return to England and help his former club.
Ostersunds were in Sweden's fourth division when he took over in 2011 but he has gained three successive promotions and led them to their first trophy — the Swedish Cup — last season. They have already beaten Galatasaray, Fola Esch and PAOK in the Europa League this campaign.
Stoke have been keen to find a replacement for Mark Hughes who has Premier League experience but are struggling to attract a candidate who suits their profile. Ryan Giggs, Chris Coleman, Garry Monk, Gary Rowett and Martin O'Neill have all been discussed.
Potter, who was born in Solihull, had an extensive playing career in England before taking coaching badges at the age of 30 and working initially as assistant coach for the England Universities squad.
