Manchester City midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko says his team-mates are desperate to win Quadruple even if Pep Guardiola calls idea 'an illusion'
- Pep Guardiola has already dismissed talk of the Quadruple as 'an illusion'
- But it isn't a feeling that is shared by everyone at Manchester City
- Zinchenko says he and his team-mates have a desire to win as much as possible
Pep Guardiola may dismiss talk of the Quadruple as ‘an illusion’ but it is becoming more of a reality every week for Manchester City.
No sooner had City despatched Burnley from the FA Cup third round than they were preparing for the first leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night against Bristol City, conquerors of Manchester United.
The games will come thick and fast now for the runaway Premier League leaders who, not surprisingly, are among the favourites for the Champions League as well.
Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed that he and his team-mates want to win as much as possible
Oleksandr Zinchenko revealed that there is not only a belief but a burning desire within Guardiola’s squad to lift all four trophies this season.
‘We can win everything and that's why we are here,’ said Zinchenko after appearing in the FA Cup for the first time at the Etihad.
‘We think about this every single day and every training session.
Zinchenko played in the FA Cup third-round victory over Burnley at home on Saturday
‘The manager told me I had to be ready for my chance. I am happy to be part of this team and train hard every day.’
Burnley skipper Ben Mee is a graduate of City’s academy and agreed that his old club are capable of a clean sweep.
‘Anyone can do all four trophies and it depends how they go on now,’ said Mee.
Sergio Aguero salvaged Manchester City from an FA Cup third-round scare on Saturday
‘City have unbelievable quality but they work hard as a team and very well organised. That gets missed sometimes.
‘They are looking good at the minute and it’s going to take a good team to stop them, that’s for sure.’
After accumulating 21 trophies in seven years at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the first one in English football cannot come soon enough for Guardiola.
A first, barren season of a gilded coaching career was not the way he wanted to start out at City, but Spaniard looks set to make up for it now.
The Argentine striker scored twice inside two minutes to turn the tie on its head
Guardiola knows from experience just how important it will be to get that first trophy in the bag. If it happens to be the Carabao Cup at Wembley next month, then all the better.
‘It’s so important,’ he said. ‘Winning helps to win more.
‘To become a big club like the teams I've faced, or United, or Liverpool with their history, you have to win.
‘We have to lift titles in the future. Without them, it’s not enough.
‘But nobody can take away what we've done so far. The pleasure we've had so far over three or four months belongs to us.’
Guardiola continues to urge caution, warning that City simply cannot afford to get ahead of themselves.
‘We have to be involved in everything,’ he added. ‘We are there as well as other teams because Chelsea are in the same position. They're in them all.
‘From my experience in Barcelona, when we won the Treble, in January you cannot talk about it. It’s unrealistic.
‘In sport, the most important thing is what's next. Visualise, focus on what’s next. If you look far away, big mistake.’
City weren’t at their best in the first half against Burnley who contained their attacking threat comfortably and took the lead after Ashley Barnes capitalised on an error by John Stones.
Ilkay Gundogan (centre) provided the assists for both of his City team-mates goals
But Guardiola’s side struck back as Ilkay Gundogan set up Sergio Aguero for two goals in the space of 93 seconds.
The first, a quickly-taken free kick while Ashley Westwood was talking to referee Graham Scott, upset manager Sean Dyche who clashed with Guardiola on the touchline.
‘We were awfully disappointed to concede it,’ said Mee. ‘They are sharp, clever players and you’d like to think we would see that (quick take).
‘But one of our players was ushered away from the ball and possibly told the whistle was being blown, and waiting for the whistle.
‘You do need your breaks against the big sides.’
