Gareth Southgate plotting England call-up for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as he steps up World Cup preparations

  • Gareth Southgate is assessing his forward options for the upcoming friendlies
  • Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford will be three strikers in the squad
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to get the nod before Liverpool's Dominic Solanke

Gareth Southgate is considering including Dominic Calvert-Lewin in his plans for England's games later this month as steps up his World Cup preparations.

England's head coach will have Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford as his three frontline forwards for the friendlies against Holland and Italy but is looking at different options for his squad and this could be an ideal time to give Calvert-Lewin experience of the senior team.

Southgate had thought about including the Everton striker in his squad for the last friendly against Brazil at Wembley in November but, when he raided Aidy Boothroyd's Under-21 group for forwards, he opted for Liverpool's Dominic Solanke and Swansea forward Tammy Abraham.

Liverpool's Dominic Solanke and Swansea's Tammy Abraham got called up ahead of him

Calvert-Lewin, however, trained with the seniors before that showpiece fixture and it is increasingly likely he will be given the opportunity to do the same again, at the very least. Southgate names his squad on March 15.

Solanke has not scored a goal for Liverpool in 20 appearances this season, while Abraham has not managed to hit the net in the Premier League since October 14 and that is likely to tip the balance in Calvert-Lewin's favour for this round of games.

The 20-year-old has played regularly for Everton all season and his ability to fill a variety of positions across the front would appeal to Southgate, who will not be afraid to experiment against Italy and Holland with 98 days until the World Cup begins.

Calvert-Lewin - who scored the goal that won the World Cup for England's Under-20s last summer - is a key figure for the Under-21s; they have a friendly against Romania and Euro 2019 qualifier against Ukraine later this month.. Both matches are at home.

But Calvert-Lewin has impressed and the friendlies provide a chance to get senior experience
