The 34-year old is a free agent after his contract finished at Hull City and Aitor Karanka believes his experience can help guide Forest in their bid for promotion next season.
Dawson made over 80 appearances for Forest as a youngster before moving to Tottenham in 2005 with Andy Reid.
Forest tried to sign Dawson in January but hope to be successful at wrapping up a deal next week.

SIMON JONES: Arsenal have snapped up Estonia youth international goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein amid interest from rival Premier League clubs.
The 16-year-old had undergone a number of trials around clubs in the UK including Manchester United, Brighton and Southampton who were all interested in taking him on.
However, the Uner 17 international has agreed a one year contract with an option for three further years.
Hein, who played for Nomme United in Tallinn, was advised by mentor Mart Poom the former Derby County and Arsenal goalkeeper who is Estonia's goalkeeping coach.
SIMON JONES: Brighton, Stoke City and Norwich City are all showing an interest in Wolves' young centre-back Cameron John.
The 18-year-old is in the last year of his contract at Molineux and the Premier League new boys are willing to listen to offers.
John can play centre-back or left-back and has impressed for Scott Sellars's U23s over the past season.
However, Wolves have plenty of competition for the first team defensive berths and are looking to add more.
