Barcelona are growing increasingly confident that central defender Samuel Umtiti will resist interest from Manchester United and sign a new contract with the club.

France international Umtiti, 24, is under contract at Barcelona until 2021 but his deal contains a £53m release clause.

United are understood to have made clear to the player's entourage that they would be willing to trigger the clause and it has been used as an extra bargaining chip as the player looks to secure a better deal in Catalonia.

However, Barcelona believe the player is content at the club and will soon put pen to paper on new terms. The new contract will see his wages double and release clause triple in value.

Barcelona, who will conclude a £100m transfer for Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in the coming weeks, may yet be open to offers for Ousmane Dembele.

If United miss out on Umtiti, they will strengthen their efforts to prise Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham but they want to pay less than the current £55m asking price for a 29-year-old who experienced injury problems last season.
