Wolves on a collision course with the Premier League over the start of next season.

The Midlands club completed a marathon 383-day campaign on Tuesday night following a 1-0 Europa League defeat by Sevilla. That loss means that Nuno Espirito Santo's men will be expected to start the new campaign on September 12 as it falls after the agreed 30-day break period.

But Molineux officials believe the problem could be resolved if Manchester City and Manchester United - who will have their first League fixtures postponed due to their progress in the Champions League and Europa League - were drawn to play Wolves and Chelsea on September 12.

The resulting postponements would allow both Nuno's and Frank Lampard's sides an extra week off. The Premier League declined to comment.

Chelsea's extended season came to a close with a defeat by Bayern Munich last Saturday. Manager Lampard has called on the Premier League to give his players extra time to rest. 'Hopefully they give us a fair start next season,' he said.

It is understood that Wolves have contacted their Chelsea counterparts to make them aware of the proposal.

Nuno has ordered his players back to training on September 1, meaning his exhausted stars will have less than three weeks off after their extended season.

While there has been no instruction to Wolves players to avoid certain countries during their 19-day break, they have been given travel advice and urged to use their common sense, with mandatory 14-day self-isolation rules in place for those returning from many countries, and coronavirus quarantine restrictions under constant review.

Wolves will not be involved in European football next season after missing out on a Europa League spot on goal difference to Tottenham, but Nuno wants up to four new players to improve a squad he believes needs fresh blood.

'We need to make good decisions to allow us to continue going as everybody wants. We need players who can make us stronger,' he said.
