Ian Poulter looks to boost Ryder Cup chances at BMW PGA Championship but wary of poor record at Wentworth

  • Ian Poulter heads to Wentworth's knowing a good display will help his chances of making the European team for this year's Ryder Cup
  • But the 42-year-old has been outspoken in his disdain for the West Course
  • Poulter has recorded one top 10 finish in 14 attempts at the European Tour event

Ian Poulter will put his love-hate relationship with Wentworth to the test as he looks to boost his Ryder Cup chances in the BMW PGA Championship.

Poulter has previously made no secret of his dislike for the West Course at European Tour headquarters, especially after the controversial redesign by Ernie Els in 2010.

But with the £5.2million event marking the next phase in Ryder Cup qualifying, with points earned from now on multiplied by 1.5, the 42-year-old knows strong performances in Europe this summer will be crucial in making the team which will attempt to regain the trophy in Paris in September.

'I'd love to have a great result around this course,' said Poulter, who has recorded just one top 10 in 14 attempts. 'I have a love-hate relationship with this place. I really have.

'I love it as a venue. I love it for the fans. I love that it's the home of the European Tour. I love it for all the right reasons but I don't love it because of my results.

'I need to change my process, go out on the golf course to be able to deliver. As a kid, I've been around this course so many times to watch the great players, and there's no excuses. I've got every part of the game that I need to perform on this golf course and it's about time I did it.'

Asked if he had analysed his previous poor performances, Poulter added: 'I'm not sure I want to sit down and look at 15 years of rubbish golf to be honest just before I'm about to go out and play.

'So let's leave the rubbish behind in my mindset when I've got a level of confidence right now.

'I've got loads of friends and family here, the sun's shining, the course is in great condition. I should be able to go out on this golf course and play well.'

Poulter's win in the Houston Open in April has put him in position to contest the FedEx Cup play-offs at the end of the PGA Tour season, with a $10million (£7.5m) bonus on offer for the overall winner.

And although the season-ending Tour Championship takes place in Atlanta the week before the Ryder Cup, Poulter is confident he can cope with the demands of both events.

'I think I can muster up enough energy to play for 10 million bucks,' he joked. 'And I think I'll have enough energy to play three days the following week.

'If I'm at the final (play-off) event I won't be doing much practise after the rounds of golf. I'll be conserving some energy because the Ryder Cup's that important for me.

'I'm looking at taking one or two of the previous events off so if it pans out the way I'd like it to, I should be very fresh and - to be honest - I could use that as a warm-up week going into the Ryder Cup.'
