Marcel upsets odds to give Peter Chapple-Hyam his third Racing Post Trophy winner

  • 33-1 outsider Marcel won the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster
  • Win gave trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam his third victory in the event
  • Favourite Foundation endured a nightmare run to finish third

Marcel sprung a 33-1 shock to give trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam his third win in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster as odds-on favourite Foundation endured a nightmare run in third.

It was a third consecutive win in the last Group One race of the domestic season for jockey Andrea Atzeni but a first win at the highest level for Newmarket-based Chapple-Hyam since 2007.

The length and a half winner joins Commander Collins (1998) and subsequent Derby winner Authorized (2006) as the trainer’s Racing Post Trophy winners.

John Gosden-trained Foundation had looked poised to cement his position at the head of the betting for that Classic but his jockey Frankie Dettori was left with nowhere to go as tiring rivals fell back on top of him.

It meant the colt part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson lost all chance while hemmed in the last two furlongs before taking a minor placing when finally free and allowed to cruise home.

Marcel, who only cost 26,000gn and had won a maiden at Newcastle in August, has been given a quote of 25-1 for the 2016 Derby by Coral but Chapple-Hyam warned he did not see the mile and a half Classic as necessarily his priority target.

The trainer said: ‘Coming here I thought he'd be placed because he's always worked like a good horse, but he's been weak. Even though I don't have many good horses, you know when a good one comes along.

‘He obviously goes on any ground and will be better next year when he's stronger. I see him as a French Derby type, I'd be worried about him staying further (12 furlongs).

‘If I get my way, he'll be in my favourite race, the Dante Stakes, but if he shows enough speed before then he could go for the Guineas.’

Foundation’s trainer John Gosden, who received his trophy for winning his second trainers’ championship earlier in the afternoon, was philosophical in defeat.

He said: ‘Frankie said they all just died in front of him and he had nowhere to go. What they do here is save the ground against the rail for this meeting, so there is always a danger of getting blocked in there because everyone aims for it.

‘The winner came around (the field) and had a free one, that's racing.’
