Golden point could be a thing of the past in finals matches if NRL coaches get their way.
That was the upshot of a meeting of the game's coaches on Wednesday night when a new system was proposed where teams play two five-minute periods of added time if scores are level after 80 minutes.
The ABCĀ reports that the NRL will now consider changing the way extra time is applied in finals games after input from the coaches, to avoid going straight to golden point when a game ends in a draw.

Golden point would only then apply if the teams still remain deadlocked after the 10 minutes of extra time.Ā
Today's golden point system sees teams play an additional five minutes each-way where the first team to score during this time is the winner.Ā
This is just the first stage of the process as a recommendation will now be put to the competition committee for consideration where a final decision will be made on making a change.Ā
The controversial golden point system was best illustrated in last year's grand final when the North Queensland Cowboys beat the Brisbane Broncos 17-16 thanks to a golden point kicked by the Cowboys' Johnathan Thurston in extra time.
Thurston's successful kick made one of the greatest grand finals - and finishes - in NRL history Ā
It was a kick that turned Thurston into a hero, but for losing coachĀ Wayne Bennett of the Brisbane Broncos it was an 'terribly unfair' to lose Ā
It is considered one of the greatest grand finals - and finishes - in NRL history, but many also consider the sudden death aspect of to be unfair.
Understandably golden point's most vocal critic is Broncos coach Wayne Bennett whose side were on the wrong end of last year's result in the grand final. Ā Ā
'It's terribly unfair that we all give so much out there and after 80 minutes of a great game of football we can't all walk off, through the season, [and] we all get a point each,' he told the ABC.
'The tragedy tonight is the Cowboys got no points and that's just... down to the lottery.'
Matthew Scott and Thurston of the Cowboys hold aloft the 2015 premiership trophy, but a different system could be in place for the 2017 season if the big decider ends in a draw after after 80 minutesĀ
