Socceroos out to reverse poor record against England

It's no wonder the 2003 triumph by the "Shockeroos" remains an inspiration to Australia's class of 2023 because it's still the only time in Anglo-Aussie men's clashes the green and gold prevailed.

In seven head-to-heads between the sides stretching back to 1980, that famous 3-1 triumph at Upton Park went against the grain of results between the sporting rivals.

Down the years England, who have only played two home matches in the series, have won four of the encounters - three of them in Australia while there have been two draws.

*England and Australia are playing at Wembley for the first time. Only two nations have ever won at England's national stadium on their first visit - Hungary's 'Magical Magyars' were famously 6-3 winners in 1953, while Sweden won 3-2 there in 1959.

*Australia last faced a European nation in a friendly in June five years ago, beating Hungary 2-1.

*Australia are seeking to end England's 17-game unbeaten run at Wembley in all competitions - won 13, drew 4 - since their 1-0 defeat to Denmark in October 2020.

*Harry Kane, with 22 goals in 31 England appearances at Wembley, needs just one more to equal Bobby Charlton's national team record of 23 in 44 games at the stadium between 1958 and 1970.

*The teams haven't met since May 2016 when England won 2-1 at the Stadium of Light with goals from Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney, while Eric Dier's own goal provided a late consolation for the 'Roos.
