Top lawmaker unveils stopgap measure to prevent shutdown
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans have unveiled legislation to keep the government open through next Wednesday to give negotiators more time to iron out a massive government-wide spending bill.
Kentucky GOP Rep. Harold Rogers said he expects the year-end budget deal to be enacted by then.
Without the stopgap measure, many government functions would shut down at midnight on Friday.
Talks on the broader spending measure and a separate tax package are advancing in fits and starts. Hopes of unveiling that bill this week have faded as negotiators struggle to sort through dozens of disagreements, including GOP policy "riders" seeking to curb the Obama administration's environmental agenda.
