Ferguson seeking to replace city prosecutor
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Ferguson is seeking to replace a city prosecutor who was criticized by the federal investigation of the St. Louis suburb's justice system after the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown.
The city posted on its website Tuesday an advertisement for a successor to Stephanie Karr, Ferguson's prosecutor since 2011. Karr also has been Ferguson's city attorney since 2004 and will retain that position, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1TKF4bz ) reported.
The Justice Department announced last March findings of its evaluation of Ferguson's policing and court practices. That probe came after the death of Brown, who was 18, black and unarmed when he was shot and killed by white police officer Darren Wilson during a confrontation. Wilson was cleared in the case.
The Justice Department, while finding racial bias in a Ferguson justice system that generated revenue largely on the backs of poor and minority residents, accused Karr of retaliating against attorneys who challenged her and dismissing friends' tickets.
A federal judge last month approved an agreement between Ferguson and the Justice Department that calls for sweeping reforms in the city's justice system. But Karr and another lawyer at her law firm still have prosecuted cases involving protesters and others accused of failing to comply with police commands, even in instances the Justice Department cited as constitutional infringements, the Post-Dispatch has reported.
