Watkins uncertain whether he will return to Rams

Last offseason, wide receiver Sammy Watkins was caught off guard when the Buffalo Bills traded him to the Los Angeles Rams.

This time around, Watkins has learned to brace himself for possible surprises. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and is not sure whether he will return to the Rams next season.

Watkins mulled his future after the Rams' season-ending playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday.

"You see this team building something, with the coaching staff and the players," Watkins said to the Orange County Register. "It would be a pleasure to come back but, you know, it's a business. I'm looking forward to talking to the coach and seeing where my future is at."

Watkins, 24, caught 39 passes for 593 yards and eight touchdowns in his first season in Los Angeles. Through four NFL seasons, he has averaged 48 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns.

The Rams could use a franchise tag or transition tag to retain Watkins. However, it is unclear how much money they are willing to invest in him after he finished fourth in receiving yards behind wide receiver Cooper Kupp (869 yards), running back Todd Gurley (788) and wide receiver Robert Woods (781).

Watkins caught only one pass for 23 yards in Saturday's loss to the Falcons.
