Disney+ confirms fate of 'bonk-buster' Rivals after rave reviews and cliff-hanger ending

Disney+ has confirmed the fate of their ‘bonk-buster’ series Rivals after it received rave reviews and left fans wanting more with a cliff-hanger ending.

The streaming giant has announced an upcoming second season of the critically-acclaimed drama starring familiar British faces such as David Tennant, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer.

Rivals is based on Jilly Cooper's saucy Rutshire Chronicles and is jam-packed with the same sharp wit, romantic entanglements, raunchy sex scenes and unforgettable characters.

The story is set in 1986 and follows the cut throat world of television, including the tense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (Tennant).

The first season saw a series of parties and luncheons in Lord Baddingham's country pile result in steamy affairs and star-crossed yearnings.

On review website Rotten Tomatoes it earned a whopping 94% from critics on the Tomatometer and an impressive 91% from all audiences on their Popcornmeter.

Fans have been begging for a second season after the final episode ended on a nail-biting cliff-hanger.

The final episode saw Doctor Who star David's character struggle with Cameron Cook (Nafessa Williams) in dramatic scenes before being hit on the head and seemingly killed.

Taking to X at the time, fans fumed: 'I just finished Rivals... My mental state? Not okay. That ending though seriously, WTF?!?! We need season 2, there's way more story that needs to be told: 'How can we not yet have a confirmed second season of Rivals? You can't have a season finale with that big cliffhanger and not renew it'.

While Disney+ has not announced the launch date for season two, fans can at least find comfort in knowing that the answers to all of their unanswered questions will be eventually be answered.

Dame Jilly Cooper said: 'Nearly 40 years after my novel Rivals was published, I’ve adored seeing the world fall in love with my beloved characters - Rutshire’s Finest.

'And it has been a fairytale come true working with Happy Prince and Disney+ on the first season.

'I’m orgasmic with excitement and cannot wait for the return of my superhero Rupert Campbell-Black and the rest of the characters in season two!'

All episodes of Rivals season one are available to stream now on Disney+.
