Nutritionists name their five healthiest McDonald's go-to items on the menu - and why the Egg McMuffin is better for you than the chain's oatmeal
- US-based dietitians Catherine Karnatz and Lara Clevenger give their go-tos
- They suggested the apple slices, vanilla cone and McDonald's Hamburger
- The Egg McMuffin and the McCrispy also made the nutritionist-approved list
Believe it or not, you can have your hamburger and eat it too — all while staying healthy.
Registered dietitians Catherine Karnatz and Lara Clevenger, from the US, have revealed the healthiest options that are on the fast-food chain's menu despite most items being high in saturated fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar.
The five tasty options range from 15 to 470 calories.
The first item on Catherine and Lara's list is the apple slices, which come in at just 15 calories.
Registered dietitians have revealed the healthiest options that are on the fast-food chain's menu. Two of their suggestions are apple slices (left) and the vanilla cone (right)
Catherine Karnatz and Lara Clevenger, from the US, also recommended The Classic McDonald's Burger (left) and the Egg McMuffin (right)
It can be both a snack or a side.
But if you're in the mood for a sweeter treat, they recommend the chain's vanilla cone, which is only 200 calories per serving.
'This soft serve ice cream contains five grams of protein and 15 per cent of the daily recommended value for calcium,' Catherine told the New York Post.
McDonald's offers nine kinds of hamburgers and out of the options, she urges people to order The Classic McDonald's Burger that contains 250 calories.
'With 12 grams of protein, it's a sure bet that you'll be feeling full and satisfied for hours while out and about,' Catherine said.
Despite its low-calorie density, she recommended not having it as a daily order.
Another item that passes the health check is the famous breakfast go-to for many, the Egg McMuffin.
The egg, cheese and Canadian bacon combo that creates the Egg McMuffin comes out to 310 calories, and features 17 grams of protein, 13 grams of fat and 30 grams of carbs.
The fifth suggestion is the chain's chicken sandwich called the McCrispy, which has 470 calories and 26 grams of protein
Despite most McDonald's food items running high in saturated fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar, there are items that are nutritionist-approved
'This is a much healthier choice for breakfast than the Fruit and Maple Oatmeal which has 320 calories, but only has six grams of protein and 4.5 grams of fat, with a whopping 64 grams of carbs,' Lara explained.
'If you're trying to watch your blood sugar or stay fuller longer, the protein and fat from the Egg McMuffin is the better option.'
The fifth recommendation is the chain's chicken sandwich called the McCrispy, which is 470 calories and has 26 grams of protein.
If you're not sold on those food options, back in 2019, dieticians Sarah Koszyk and Melanie Flinn also offered up their own recommendations for healthier McDonald's choices.
Sarah advised that Happy Meals weren't just for kids, suggesting people order one even if you're an adult.
It contains 475 calories and offers a mix of everything off the menu.
'Order a cheeseburger, kids fries, and apple slices, which provide a well-balanced meal including a serving of fruit from the apples, protein from the burger and cheese and grains and starches from the bun and fries,' Sarah said.
Other dieticians revealed their healthy McDonald's go-tos, with the Fruit and Maple Oatmeal making the list at 320 calories.
