Speed read: Why satchels are bringing back geek chic
Geek has been chic for a while, but this spring it has really hit the mainstream.
You may not have owned one since you were at school, but the most fashionable bag to carry right now is a satchel, as shown by TV presenter/model Alexa Chung.
Just about every designer label is doing one — from Marni to Proenza Schouler and Chloe — and the most desirable style is a slouchy briefcase shape, in traditional tan, with a long shoulder strap, a handle on top and two smart buckles.

Naturally, it’s Mulberry that’s produced the season’s must-have version — called the Tillie, it’s available in chestnut or black leather for £812 — but the High Street also has a great selection if your lunch money won’t stretch that far.

HOW TO WEAR
- The satchel looks best when worn with preppy-meets-blue-stocking attire — think blazers with patched sleeves, printed floral mini-dresses, boldly coloured tights and brogues.
- Neon is another key trend for spring, so you could kill two trends with one purchase if you opt for a satchel in a zingy, fluoro colour.
- Can’t afford a new bag? Vogue suggests that you take an existing bag and knot a long scarf over the handle to fashion a shoulder strap, then wear side-swung.
