Ask a woman to put on a pair of trousers, and she's happy to do so; throw her a skirt, and even if it's just above the knee, she'll probably go with it - give her a pair of shorts, and she'll either look terrified or laugh in your face.
British women just don't seem to be able to do shorts in the sleek, chic way that Italian and French women can.
But if your legs are good, there's simply no reason not to, especially as this season isn't all about microscopic hotpants.
Bottega Veneta, Alberta Ferretti and Donna Karan all showcased shorts above the knee, but they still covered a good portion of thigh, and it's a shape that's widely available on the High Street.
If you want to wear shorts in town, don't pair them with a skimpy vest or a midriff-baring top like Jennifer Lopez - you'll look like you got lost en route to the beach. Instead, cover up on top.
A smart short suit with a tailored jacket is acceptable office wear in many companies, while for a more casual look, pair with a chunky knit or a cropped trench.
