'The first script he gave them was to consume red meat again for a month and see if you can get pregnant,' Mr Norton told a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday.

'Nine out of 10 times that's what actually happens.'

Committee chair and Liberal-National Party senator Barry O'Sullivan predicts the strategy could be a hit.

'There'll be a big run on the supermarkets with honeymooners after that,' Senator O'Sullivan said.

A report from the Meat Advisory Board explained that red meat is rich in two very important nutrients for fertility: selenium and vitamin B6.

It is well known that having a selenium deficiency can cause pregnancy loss, pre-eclampsia, Intrauterine growth restriction, preterm labour, and gestational diabetes.

Pork is also a good source of selenium and vitamin B6. It has been found in previous studies that this vitamin is so useful because it helps to regulate women's hormonal activity.

Meat is also high in iron stores which is important for making extra blood in the body for you and your baby-to-be.

Every time a woman loses blood through her period she needs to replenish it with a serving of iron-rich foods or supplements.
