Travellers name the ONE place they'd visit in the world if they could go right now - so is your dream location on the list?

  • TripAdvisor asked people to name the destination they'd most like to travel to
  • Australia's borders have been closed to non-residents since March 20
  • Australian citizens are banned from travelling overseas without an exemption
  • Tropical and outdoorsy locations like Iceland, Tahiti and Peru dominated the list
  • Europe won out with dozens yearning for cities like Paris, Amsterdam and Bruges
  • Italy was the most popular country with destinations like Rome and Amalfi Coast

Mountainous towns and islands surrounded by turquoise oceans are where most travel-deprived holidaymakers would fly to if the coronavirus crisis ended tomorrow, a Twitter poll by TripAdvisor has revealed.

Australia's borders have been closed to non-residents since March 20, while Australian citizens and permanent residents are banned from travelling overseas unless they obtain an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs.

So it's no wonder that tropical and action-packed destinations dominated the list, with Iceland, Peru, Tahiti and Ireland's 'Wild Atlantic Way' which runs the length of its west coast coming out on top.

Italy emerged as the most popular country thanks to its unrivalled abundance of ancient history, world-class food and 'Instagram-able' beaches found everywhere from Sicily to the Amalfi Coast.

Europe emerged as the most-coveted continent, with dozens yearning for culturally rich cities like Paris, Athens and Bruges in northwest Belgium.

Asia and Oceania's Top Spots

Tahiti, New Zealand's South Island and Kerala, on India's tropical Malabar Coast, are the locations grounded travellers most want to visit in Asia and Oceania.

The Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland was the top-voted Australian destination with their dense rainforest, scenic hiking trails and white sand beaches.

One woman said: 'New Zealand - I went to the South Island last year and absolutely loved it - even if it was in their winter and it was sleeping in a hoodie!'

Europe's Top Spots

Sights and cities across western Ireland are top of people's minds, with the historic town of Galway, the Cliffs of Moher and the remote Aran Islands voted number one by dozens of eager travellers.

One woman said: 'It's got to be Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way – the longest coastal drive in the world!'

Almost every Italian region was named, with dozens lusting after Rome, the northern Lakes district of Garda and Como and the southern islands of Corsica and Sardinia.

Elsewhere in Europe people long to return to the leafy canals of Amsterdam and Carcasonne in the south of France, which one man remembered as a 'fascinating and very beautiful place to be'.

Others are dreaming of Spanish cities like Seville and the icy landscapes of Scandinavia, with Bergen in western Norway and the Icelandic capital Reykjavik both featuring.

One said: 'Norway was one of my favourite trips. Bergen was great, but Flãm is, unfortunately, a tourist town. We ended up in Aurland - much more authentic and better views of the fjord.'

South, Central and North America's Top Spots

Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica are the first countries in South and Central America that people plan to visit after the pandemic, drawn to the great wealth of challenging mountain treks, lush green jungle and pristine beaches.

'My choice is Aruba,' one man said of the Dutch-governed island in the Caribbean which has been voted the 'best island vacation destination' on the planet.

Travellers are also researching adventurous North American outposts like Alaska, the Grand Canyon and Canada's western seaboard.

'To the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada and Pacific Rim National Park,' one woman said.

Hawaii, Las Vegas and New York were other US cities top of people's lists.

The quirkiest most-wanted location

One exceptionally adventurous traveller said he plans to visit Ashgabat, the capital of the secretive and infamously insular central Asian state of Turkmenistan, as soon as the pandemic is over.

Famous for its opulent and expensive architecture, Ashgabat holds the world record for the highest density of white marble buildings – more than 500 in total - which dominate the city skyline.

Although undoubtedly an impressive sight, it's one few international visitors have seen.

Turkmenistan not only demands that foreigners obtain a visa to enter the country - they must be invited to do so by the country's shadowy Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Most travellers determined enough to visit book an organised trip with a reputable tour company, which is the easiest way to receive a letter of invitation.

And with travel off-limits for the foreseeable future, many struggled to whittle it down to just one destination.

'Paris... No, Vancouver... No, all of Germany... Wow, this isn't easy!' one man said.

A second said: 'So tough, been to so many amazing places that hold such great memories. Havana or a Greek island.'

'Iceland... wait Croatia. So many amazing spots around the world that I’ve seen but those are definitely two favourites!' added a third.

A fourth said: 'Lalibela in Ethiopia, but Tokyo too, both so different yet so amazing and memorable!'
