Internet users from across the world have shared the hilariously inappropriate situations their older relations have used the 'crying with laughter' emoji in.

A gallery shared to Bored Panda shows how the common confusion over the meaning behind the laughing emoji has led to some very awkward messages.

In one unfortunate instance, a mother who mistook the laughing face for a crying emoji announced her son's death with the emoji.
