'I've been doing this wrong my whole life': 'Mind-blowing' trick for pouring red-top soy sauce the correct way takes the internet by storm
- A radio host revealed the correct way to pour soy sauce from a Kikkoman bottle
- The iconic dispenser has a teardrop shape and a red lid with holes on either side
- The trick was shared on the TikTok of Melbourne breakfast show, Jase and PJ
- Jason Hawkins tells co-host Polly Harding to pour soy into a bowl
- He then tells her to cover one lid hole which allows her to control the flow
The lids of soy sauce dispensers have holes in either side to allow you to pour from one and control the flow by placing a finger over the other, Australian radio hosts have revealed.
The trick was demonstrated in a video shared on the TikTok account of Melbourne breakfast show, Jase and PJ, with both presenters 'mind-blown' by the discovery.
In the clip, Jason Hawkins gives co-host Polly Harding a bottle of Kikkoman soy sauce - the iconic teardrop-shaped dispenser with a red top - and tells her to pour some into a cup.
'Woah woah woah, that poured out quite quickly, didn't it? How would we slow this down?' Jason asks as she obliges.
'Mind-blown': Melbourne radio host Polly 'PJ' Harding covers the hole at the back of the lid (left), stemming the flow of soy sauce, and releases her finger (right), allowing it to pour freely
He then instructs Polly to place a finger over the hole at the back of the lid and pour again, slowly releasing the pressure from her finger as she goes.
Polly Harding (pictured) was astounded by the revelation, declaring: 'It's like I'm at the petrol pump!'
Covering one hole allows Polly to control the flow of sauce, reducing it to a steady drip when her finger is pressed fully down and opening it to a steady stream as she gently releases it.
Amazed, Polly declares: 'It's like I'm at the petrol pump!'
'Mind. Blown,' adds Jason.
The video has gone viral since it was shared on Wednesday, racking up more than 730,000 views and thousands of comments from followers arguing about whether the trick was really a revelation at all.
One said: 'I was today years old when I learned this!'
A second said: 'Okay I thought the two holes were to pour into two bowls at once.'
'I've been doing this wrong my entire life,' said a third.
But others were shocked by Jason and Polly's surprise and said they'd known about the concept since childhood.
'Wait – people didn't know this?!' one woman said.
'I knew about this when I was six,' said another.
A third added: 'Seriously guys? Welcome to 2020.'
Now an iconic fixture in restaurants and supermarkets around the world, the Kikkoman soy sauce dispenser (pictured) was created in 1961 by Japanese designer Kenji Ekuan
Now an iconic fixture in restaurants and supermarkets around the world, the Kikkoman soy sauce dispenser was created in 1961 by Japanese product designer Kenji Ekuan.
Ekuan was a naval officer who switched careers after witnessing the devastation of Hiroshima following the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945.
'Faced with nothingness, I felt a great nostalgia for human culture. I needed something to touch, to look at. Right then, I decided to be a maker of things,' he told the New York Times in 2012.
Ekuan and his team spent three years devising the teardrop shape of the glass bottle, and more than 100 prototypes were tested before arriving at the 'dripless' spout which is based on a teapot, but inverted.
