A pie is a staple of classic British cuisine but a new trend of deconstructing this hearty meal and turning it into a stew with a pastry lid has riled food lovers.

Now foodies have shared the worst examples of this craze on Twitter and Instagram as they debate what makes a dish a true pie on social media.

The popular Twitter account We Want Plates, which is dedicated to sharing photos of food served up in ridiculous ways - started the debate to mark British Pie Week, a national celebration of this pub menu icon.

Soon dozens of purists were mocking the restaurant trend of serving stews with pastry lids on top and calling them 'pies'.

They insist that a pie can only be called by this name if the entire meal is encased in pastry. 

They've shared what they believe are the worst examples of this craze on social media... so do you agree?
