Quite a catch: Stunning close-up photos show hungry brown bear use paws to swipe red salmon he wants for dinner from the water
These stunning close-up photographs of a hungry bear show him using his paws to swipe a salmon he wants for dinner from the water.
The bear can be seen at Kurile Lake in Kamchatka, Russia, waiting for the right opportunity, before lashing out and snatching the fish.
His technique involves sitting with his head underwater – and making the crucial lunge once the fish begin ignoring him and come close.
For safety precautions, Mike Korostelev, 33, took the photographs from a metal cage underwater and used a stick for over-water images.
According to adventure trip organiser and photographer Mr Korostelev, this bear is the biggest in the area where he took the pictures.
He spent the day at Ozernaya River capturing images of the bear, who returned to the water many times between resting on the beach.
Mr Korostelev said: ‘There was definitely danger involved in taking these pictures - but we tried to do it carefully without big risk for us.
‘I constructed the cage to photograph the bear from a small distance, waiting for the bear to come closely for fishing.’
