President Donald Trump tweeted out of scathing review Wednesday of HBO's Bill Maher, days after the late night talk host performed a mock 'eulogy' of the president, whom he ridiculed as a 'spectacular p****' who wasn't welcome at solemn occasions.
The fake 'funeral' service, set up in Maher's yard with organ music, flowers, and an unflattering Trump photo, including slicing jokes that cast Trump as selfish and out of his depth – after Trump did not attend services for civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis.
'Watched @billmaher last week for the first time in a long time. He's totally SHOT, looks terrible, exhausted, gaunt, and weak,' Trump wrote on Twitter. 'If there was ever a good reason for no shutdown, check out this jerk. He never had much going for him, but whatever he did have is missing in action!' Trump wrote.
Trump had previously called Maher a 'wacko' last year, and before running for office had a long-running feud after Maher said he would pay $5 million to charity if Trump provided a birth certificate showing he is not 'spawn of his mother having sex with orangutan.' Maher did not pay; Trump did not sue.
In his routine Friday, Maher brought up numerous luminaries including Sen. John McCain who expressed wishes not to have Trump take part in services after their deaths.
The president said he watched Maher for the 'first time in a long time' last week
President Trump blasted comedian Bill Maher days after the late night host ridiculed Trump in a mock 'eulogy'
'What kind of spectacular p**** do you have to be that everyone's last request is make sure that a**hole isn't at my funeral,' Maher said. He highlighted John Lewis (center) and clockwise from top left: Elijah Cummings; John Dingell; Barbara Bush and John McCain.
'What kind of spectacular p**** do you have to be that everyone's last request is make sure that a**hole isn't at my funeral,' Maher asked as he set up the stunt. 'Our loved one is dead, don't ruin it.'
He highlighted other public figures whose memorials Trump had not attended.
Then he took to eulogizing the 'late' president – after stating for the record that he didn't want anyone to actually harm Trump physically.
'Some men look at the world and ask, 'Why?' Donald Trump looked at the world and asked, 'What's in it for me?' Maher said. 'His generosity knew only limits, and he never once failed to put himself before others.'
'So many wanted to speak here today but couldn't brake their non-disclosure agreements,' he said in another dig at Trump.
'Our hearts go out to Melania who RSVP'd 'maybe,' he quipped.
Some of Maher's lines were light, others were more personal.
He called Trump 'A man of few words: about 100, mostly tremendous, disgusting, strongly, and s***hole.'
He continued: 'Donald loved so many things: money, golf, lawsuits, porn stars, dictators organized crime and the 35 per cent of the American people who still like him. The other 65 per cent can go f*** themselves.'
Maher, 64, also took a shot at Trump's deferments from Vietnam.
'He once said that the experience of not being in Vietnam taught him the most important lesson of all: that there's no problem so big you can't lie your way out of it,' he said.
Maher also insulted the president with a hashtag of the video, '#FlyWhinyLittleB****Fly'
But even a social media follower with the hashtag @tRumpMustGo wasn't blown away.
'Meh,' the user wrote. 'The idea is funny, but mock eulogy needed funny material.'
It wasn't immediately clear how Trump's tweet might affect viewership of the clip. It had more than 1 million views on YouTube Wednesday morning, and jumped from about 280,000 views to 350,000 views on Twitter over the course of an hour.
