Like father, like sons! Mischievous Today host Karl Stefanovic plays kickabout with lookalike sons Jackson and River

He's a regular on our television screens Monday to Friday with his Gold Logie Award winning role on Nine's Today breakfast program.

But on Friday afternoon after the show Karl Stefanovic returned to his most important role - being a dad.

The 39-year-old father-of-three played soccer with his two sons Jackson and River in a Northshore park in Sydney - although he needs some AFL practice for a game next week.

Karl will pull on the boots for the first time since playing a handful of matches for a Brisbane junior side in the annual EJ Whitten Legends Game at Etihad Stadium Melbourne on July 1.

The match, which will also be broadcast on the Nine Network, has been held annually since 1996 and features former AFL players and celebrities such as Hamish Blake, Andy Lee and Vince Colosimo.

'I grew up playing soccer so I am exceptional at milking free kicks,' Karl said.

'I did play AFL at Alexander Hills in year seven or eight ... I loved kicking the ball around but contact was a problem because I was slight, and to be truthful I got smashed.'

The boys, who are currently on their winter break, look the spitting image of their father as they  laughed and joked about while playing soccer.

For the boy's day out, they left their sister Ava with mum Cassandra, as they spent quality time together.

Karl wore a blue hoody, navy tracksuit bottoms and red trainers as he tried to score goals on the boys.

The TV presenter was also getting some exercise in with his boys before heading to his co-host, Richard Wilkins' 60th birthday bash at The Star in Sydney that night.

The star-studded soiree was also attended by the rest of the Today family including the gorgeous Lisa Wilkinson and blonde news reader Sylvia Jeffreys.

Pop princess Kylie Minogue showed up with the cake and sang Richard happy birthday like Marilyn Monroe for John F. Kennedy.

The beautiful Delta Goodrem was also there alongside Big Brother winner Tim Dormer and  handsome Nova presenters Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald and Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli.
