The 56-year-old was also supported by his stunning partner Lauren Silverman at the 24th edition of the event, held at London's Grosvenor House, and looked thrilled at the prospect of picking up the prestigious prize, awarded to a prominent public figure each year.
Cowell was being recognised for his contribution to the music and entertainment industry, as well as to charitable causes.
Lauren stole the show on the red carpet in an elegant strapless gown featuring a white bodice and a flowing black skirt.
The 38-year-old beauty, who raises 20-month-old son Eric with Simon, added a dazzling diamond necklace and matching earrings, wearing her hair pulled back from her face to emphasise her decolletage.
Simon got suited and booted for the occasion in one of his trademark crisp white shirts, which he naturally wore unbuttoned to reveal a glimpse of chest hair.

The Syco supremo was beaming as he laced a protective arm around Lauren's waist, looking thrilled at the prospect of picking up the top prize.
David Munns, chairman of the MITS Award committee said: 'We are proud to recognise his outstanding contributions to the UK music and entertainment industries and his personal support of many charitable causes.
'The creativity and excitement of The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, for example, have left an indelible impression on our contemporary culture, whilst his record label Syco has proven itself a world leader in the development and success of inspiring, talented artists. Simon Cowell is a well deserving honouree.'

Cowell follows in the footsteps to the likes of Sir Elton John, Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Jools Holland and Gary Barlow.
Meanwhile, Natlie Imbruglia dazzled in an elegant dress with a sheer spangled layer over the top of a simple black shift as she arrived at the event.
The 40-year-old singer's garment was cinched in at the waist with a glittering strip of material to matching the sequin embellished stripes running across the garment.
