'They're like family to me': Silverchair bass player Chris Joannou to sell off his musical gear potentially scuttling talk of an anticipated band reunion

He's the Australian rocker who provided the bass lines for 90s hitmakers Silverchair.

And Chris Joannou looks to have scuttled talk of a long awaited reunion with the bass player selling off most of his musical gear.

The 38-year-old, who has now stepped into the restaurant game, as part owner of Newcastle eatery The Edwards, has taken to online music marketplace Reverb this week to give fans a chance at snapping up a piece of Oz rock history.

Tellingly, though, in a statement on the site, Chris said he was parting with the items as he 'no longer needed them.'

Two jewels in the crown of the sale, which kicks off on Thursday, are two 1970s-era Fender Precision bass guitars - named Whitey and Phil - that were Chris' go-to instruments during Silverchair's last tour for their 2007 album Young Modern.

Speaking to the site, Chris said the guitars were like 'family to him.'

'The gear...needs to go to a loving home  especially the bass guitars that have been on tour,' he said.

Chris continued: 'They've been like family to me - they all have names. They've been with me for so long, toured all over the world with me, they've seen me at my best and at my worst. But I'm no longer using them, and it's time for someone else to enjoy them.'

Also up for grabs is the black Stuart Spector bass that Chris  used on the band's 1997 album Freak Show, as well as amplifiers, effects pedals and a raft of recording equipment from Chris' home studio.

He added: 'To me where the band was left, it was like there was no bookend. Kind of like, I felt were were midway through chapter 8 of a 12-chapter book and then we stopped writing.'
