Most musicians would never think of asking the public for money to help them quit their chosen profession. Then again, most musicians aren’t Vince Staples.
The Long Beach-based rapper recently launched a GoFundMe page to raise money so he can quit making music, according to NME. Staples has set his target at $2 million (£1.4 million).
Rapper Vince Staples is asking the public to fund his early retirement via GoFundMe
In a video posted on top of the GoFundMe page, Staples says: ‘First and foremost, I hope you’re having a great day. I really do. Second, we’ve gotten a lot of complaints about our recent show performances, energy on stage, production choice. I think one person said it sounds like we’re rapping on robot video game beats. We’d like to apologize for that.’
The rapper then proposes an alternative: donating to his campaign to fund his early retirement.
If he reaches his goal, Staples promises that 'you will never hear from me again. No songs, interviews, no anything'. On the page, he also states that he will move to Palmdale, California and buy a Honda, puppy and a 'year supply of soups for the homies locked down'.
So far, the rapper is very short of his goal, pulling in just $601 (£432).
Despite this, Staples probably shouldn’t be too worried about his future. His latest album, Big Fish Theory, was released to critical acclaim in June 2017. He also contributed to the soundtrack of Hollywood’s latest blockbuster, Black Panther, and launched his own sneaker line collaboration with Converse.
