'There's some things I don't think are appropriate to joke about': Andrew Denton appears offended by Hard Chat host Tom Gleeson as he mocks the TV legend's euthanasia campaign

Comedian Tom Gleeson took a swipe at Andrew Denton's new Channel Seven venture Interview and his euthanasia campaign during Hard Chat on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old comedian took aim at Interview's sliding ratings since its premiere last month.

Tom, 39, suggested he should be a guest on the TV legend's new Seven series to help 'increase ratings', joking: 'Maybe I could be a guest on your show?'

When Andrew appeared confused by his offer, Tom gave a brutal response: 'To increase ratings... my show rates more than yours.'

'If I went on there I could draw a younger audience over to your show,' Tom said.

'What do you mean your show? This is Charlie's show!' Andrew retorted, referring to the fact Hard Chat features on ABC's The Weekly with Charlie Pickering.

Earlier in the chat Tom also took aim at the 57-year-old's euthanasia campaign which was prompted by his father Kit's painful death from heart failure in 1997.

'You want to change euthanasia laws, is that in case you want to put your new TV show down?' Tom asked.

'You know, there's some things I don't think are appropriate to joke about and...'

'That's your new TV show!' Tom interjected.

'Assisted dying is one of those things...I was raised to have compassion for the dying, it's why I agreed to come on this show!' Andrew said.

Tom appeared to hit a sore-point by broaching the topic as Denton shot the host a rather contemptuous look.
