'I'm sad I won't get Leah pregnant again': Father-of-four Rob Delaney reveals he has had a vasectomy two years after his son Henry passed away
- Their beloved son Henry died in January 2018 from a brain tumour when he was aged two
- The toddler underwent surgery to remove the tumour in addition to further treatment, spending a gruelling 15 months in hospital
- But his family were told his cancer had returned in the autumn of 2017 before he passed away the following January
- A vasectomy, or male sterilisation, is a procedure to cut the tubes that carry a man's sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy without further contraception
- Rob, 43, said the couple haven't ruled out having more children via adoption
- His wife has been pregnant for three of the eight years they have been together
Rob Delaney has had a vasectomy after he and his wife went through an 'insane six years of being pregnant and breastfeeding, and sometimes doing those things while caring for a dying child'.
The Catastrophe star, 43, said while he is 'sad' he won't get partner Leah pregnant again, the couple haven't ruled out having more children in the future via adoption.
The actor and writer detailed the process in a candid piece for the Guardian, explaining while his whole family 'loves babies', they have been through a great deal after the death of son Henry two years ago when he was just two.
'I'm sad I won't get Leah pregnant again': Catastrophe star Rob Delaney has detailed his vasectomy but says he and his wife are having unprotected sex BEFORE finding out if op was a success (pictured in April 2018)
He said: 'I did this because my wife and I don’t want her to get pregnant again. It doesn’t mean we don’t want any more kids, it just means that if we did have any more, they’d have to be adopted or stolen or left to us because friends or family with young kids died in a plane crash or had their brain stems blown apart by less-lethal rounds fired at them at point-blank range while they were waiting in an 11-hour line.'
'I am sad sometimes that I won’t get Leah pregnant again. Our youngest recently turned two and it hurts to think that we won’t make more chunky little nuggets together.
'We really love babies... But after an insane six years of being pregnant and breastfeeding, and sometimes doing those things while caring for a dying child. On balance, we’re glad I did it.'
Rob said that he is yet to have his semen tested to find out if the operation was a success due to Covid, but he has been having unprotected sex with his wife.
Ouch! Rob explained that his operation was done under local anaesthetic but he admitted he could feel much of what was being done by doctors
He jokes that this might mean that they end up having more babies.
Rob said that his wife had been pregnant for three of the eight years they have been together and they had four beautiful boys.
Sadly, their beloved son Henry died in January 2018 from a brain tumour when he was aged two. He had been diagnosed in 2016.
The toddler underwent surgery to remove a tumour in addition to further treatment, spending a gruelling 15 months in hospital. But his family were told his cancer had returned in the autumn of 2017 before he passed away the following January.
Father and son: Rob and Leah sadly lost their son Henry to cancer cwhen he was aged two - he paid tribute to him on Father's Day with this picture two years on from his heartbreaking death
Rob said that being in the hospital to have his vasectomy brought back all sorts of memories of Hnnry.
He said that he 'fantasised about them telling me I’d have to stay in the hospital for a while,' and he could use that time to think about his late son and feel a 'close communion' with him.
Rob also paid tribute to Henry on Father's Day, this year.
The actor and writer shared a photo of a newborn Henry sleeping on his lap, telling his Instagram followers: 'I'm still his dad & he's still my son.'
Rob explained that his vasectomy was done under local anaesthetic but he admitted he could feel much of what was being done by doctors.
And because he had not been nil by mouth before the operation, they were unable to give him anything stronger to block out the sensations.
So he said he had to put up with it, feeling everything that was taking place during the 30-minute procedure but acknowledged it was nothing compared to his wife's four labours.
Rob said that his youngest son has just turned two and he is sad that they won't be having anymore because he and Leah 'really love babies.'
While he and Leah have been engaging in some risky love-making, he said he thinks the operation did work as she usually gets pregnant 'with the speed and purpose with which I run to the gas station when we’re out of peanut butter.'
He joked that the gas station is the nearly place to his house which sells peanut butter.
