Mukkam Post Bombilwaadi Movie Review : A theatrical farce that's hilarious only in parts

    Critic's Rating: 3.0/5
Review: Around two decades ago, Paresh Mokashi gave the Marathi theatre audience a play called Mukkam Post Bombilwadi, which revolved around an absurd but hilarious story. For the big screen, Mokashi and team adapt the same premise on a cinematic scale.

Set in 1942, Mukkam Post Bombilwadi unfolds in three locations – Adolf Hitler's office in Germany, Winston Churchill’s war room in London, and the sleepy village of Bombilwadi in Konkan, Maharashtra. Amid mounting tensions of World War II, Hitler (Prashant Damle) gets a call about some innovation in Japan that can help him win the war. In no mood to waste time, Hitler decides to fly to Japan on his own (despite not knowing how to fly a plane). In the meantime, Churchill’s (Anand Ingale) spies tell him about Hitler’s plan and the British PM vows to stop Hitler come what may. The story then shifts to Bombilwadi, where multiple things are unfolding – a play is being rehearsed, a British police officer in love with Hitler’s partner Eva Braun is more focused on staging Shakespeare’s plays than maintaining law and order in Bombilwadi, and freedom fighters are plotting to send the Brits back with the ‘do or die’ slogan. In between all this, Hitler crash-lands in Bombilwadi. How, and what happens later is what the film is largely about.

Mukkam Post Bombilwadi requires suspension of logic, but it is an interesting idea on paper. Where else would you see Hitler coming to Konkan and getting caught in a comedy of errors? But there’s a problem with the treatment of this film. While the setting changes from stage to screen, the execution doesn’t, making this look like a play unfolding on the big screen. For a farcical film like this, clever use of writing and dialogue can make a huge difference. In Mukkam Post Bombilwadi, this comes through only in a few scenes.

The cast is packed with seasoned actors, including Prashant Damle, Anand Ingale, Vaibhav Mangle, Geetanjali Kulkarni, as well as younger actors like Ritika Shrotri, Manmeet Pem and Pranav Raorane. While all actors are sincere in their portrayals, it is Damle and Mangle that stand out. Another issue with the film is that it tries to do too much in too short a time.

The final result is a film that doesn’t hold your attention throughout despite its absurdly hilarious premise. It ensures a few laughs but doesn’t hit it out of the park.

I recently watched Mukkam Post Bombilwadi after being drawn in by the trailer and the presence of famous actors. I spent ₹1900 on tickets and refreshments, but unfortunately, the experience was far from satisfying.
The movie turned out to be much shorter than expected, and despite the intriguing premise shown in the trailer, the plot was weak and lacked substance. The story failed to engage, and it felt like there was no real depth or direction. I was hoping for a more entertaining and meaningful experience, but the humor, which was the main focus, quickly became repetitive and uninspired.
I had high hopes because of the talented cast, but they couldn’t salvage a film that ultimately felt like a wasted opportunity. The movie felt more like a stage play, and the pacing was off, leaving no room for emotional connection or investment in the characters.
To make matters worse, I ended up watching this movie on New Year’s Eve, expecting a fun and memorable start to the year. Instead, I felt like I wasted my time, money, and even my New Year’s celebration. Not only was I disappointed, but my family was also angry at me for choosing this film, as it ruined our plans for a good time together.
What added to my frustration was that this movie was heavily promoted and highly recommended on platforms like BookMyShow, which led me to believe it would be an enjoyable watch. Given the promotion, my expectations were high, and I am deeply disappointed that it did not live up to the hype.
How could the movie be rated 3/5 by critics when it was such a letdown? I fail to understand how such a rating was given, as it certainly didn’t meet the standard expected from a film with this much promotion.
In short, I feel that my time, money, and family time were wasted. I would have rather spent this money elsewhere, on something far more worthwhile. I would not recommend this movie, especially to those who expect a solid storyline or a film that lives up to its trailer’s promise.
I kindly request a refund of ₹1900 for this disappointing experience.
I hope this feedback is taken into account, as there is potential for improvement in future projects.
---
This includes your frustration about the 3/5 rating.
