Mazaiyil Nanaigiren Movie Review : An uninspiring romantic drama

Mazaiyil Nanaigiren Movie Synopsis: A lackadaisical youngster falls in love with an ambitious girl. Though the latter initially discourages the former's proposal, she goes on to accept him. However, destiny plays spoilsport in their plans. Will they be able to survive against all the odds?

Mazaiyil Nanaigiren Movie Review: Director T Suresh Kumar treads on a tried-and-tested formula in this romantic drama that primarily revolves around two characters - Jeeva (Anson Paul) - a laid-back young man who has no purpose in life and Aishwarya (Reba John) - a determined girl who wants to pursue higher studies in the US. Their unexpected encounter and the conflicts that they go through initially offer nothing new to the audience. The hero-meets-heroine trope becomes familiar and predictable as the story moves forward.

The stark difference in their faiths and their respective parents disowning them post their decision to begin a new life is another done-to-death aspect that the filmmaker relies on. However, he attempts to bring in a couple of novel ideas in the latter half coupled with a twist that partly works. The chemistry between Anson and Reba comes across as a relief despite the latter's character not sufficiently fleshed out. The lead actors fit into their respective roles and deliver what is expected of them. Vetrivel Raja and Kishore Rajkumar make their presence felt in important characters.

The surprise the filmmaker comes up with in the pre-climax portion doesn't engage the viewers, thanks to the lack of riveting moments until then. Vishnu Prasad's music elevates a few sequences while the sub-par editing, poor VFX and weak dialogues rub salt into the wound. Some of the scenes involving the lead actors that happen after a major conflict appear decent when compared to other sequences that are written and performed in a generic manner. The uninspiring writing is such that we seldom come across such enjoyable, slice-of-life moments in the film.
