Defending FA Cup holders Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round by beating Arsenal on penalties.

Sunday's first half have suffered from a lack of quality from both sides, with Gabriel Martinelli coming closest before his effort was ruled out for offside.

The game erupted into life after the interval with United as Bruno Fernandes put the visitors into the lead before United's momentum was halted when Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second booking. Arsenal then promptly found an equaliser through a deflected volley from Gabriel.

The Gunners then had a golden opportunity to take the lead after being awarded a penalty but Altay Bayindir produced a fine stop to deny Martin Odegaard from 12 yards.

After a tense extra 30 minutes the game was decided by spot kicks, with a miss from Kai Havertz sending Ruben Amorim's side through.

Mail Sport's AADAM PATEL was at the Emirates to give his expert analysis on both teams.

ARSENAL (4-3-3):

David Raya (6)

Had a comfortable first-half but could do nothing to keep out Bruno Fernandes’s strike at the start of the second half. Crucal stop when he got down to deny Joshua Zirkzee late on. Dived the wrong way for all five penalties.

Jurrien Timber (7)

One of the few bright sparks for Arsenal. Tried to make things happen and was impressive down the right flank. Replaced in the 100th minute for Thomas Partey.

William Saliba (7)

Solid defensively and reliable as ever but will be kicking himself at the way his side let United hit them on the counter.

Gabriel Magalhaes (6.5)

A rare mistake from the Brazilian that led to United’s goal but he made up with a solid finish for Arsenal’s equaliser. Most relieved man in the ground.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (6.5)

The 18-year-old is keeping Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney out of the team and was impressive again until he was substituted for Leandro Trossard at the start of extra time.

Martin Odegaard (6)

More touches than anyone else in the game but missed the crucial penalty which would have won Arsenal the tie in normal time. Converted his spot-kick in the shoot-out.

Jorginho (6)

One of just three Arsenal changes made by Mikel Arteta and did what was expected of him, controlling the tempo of the game, without doing anything special.

Mikel Merino (5)

Was largely missing in a first half where he completed just seven of Arsenal’s 204 passes. Has to show more. Taken off for Declan Rice in the 73rd minute.

Gabriel Jesus (5.5)

Came in for Leandro Trossard and offered a threat until he was stretchered off in the 40th minute with a bad injury. Joins Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri on the sidelines.

Kai Havertz (4)

Only he knows how he missed two sitters with the game at 1-1 when it was harder to miss than score. Arguably dived to win the penalty too. And missed his spot-kick in the shoot-out.

Gabriel Martinelli (6)

Good finish in the first-half but was miles offside. Didn’t cause enough problems in the final third as Arsenal failed to make their man advantage count.

Substitutions

Raheem Sterling (7)

Replaced Jesus in the 40th minute and was tidy when he came on, regularly offering a threat.

Declan Rice (7)

Came on for Merino and made a difference, forcing two brilliant saves. Top penalty.

Leandro Trossard (6)

Replaced Lewis-Skelly at the end of normal time and was inches away from getting the winner.

Thomas Partey (6)

On for Timber in extra time. Good penalty.

Kieran Tierney (6)

On for Jorginho in the 113th minute.

UNUSED: Neto, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Butler-Oyedeji

Manager: Mikel Arteta (6)

Will question how his side did not win this in normal time. His changes made a difference but Arsenal were wasteful and this was further evidence that they need a quality striker.

MAN UNITED (3-4-2-1):

Altay Bayindir (9)

Could have done better in the build up to Arsenal’s equaliser but made a stunning save from Martin Odegaard’s penalty and a few more after. United’s hero in the shoot-out.

Matthijs De Ligt (7)

Part of a United back three that was largely solid. Unlucky as Gabriel’s goal took a wicked deflection off him but made an unbelievable clearance to deny Trossard in extra time.

Harry Maguire (7)

Looked comfortable and the penalty decision against him was harsh. Apart from that, did not do much wrong at all and can take pride from a brilliant display. Blossoming under Amorim.

Lisandro Martinez (6.5)

Like De Ligt and Maguire, defended well. Booked in the 29th minute for a foul on Jesus and had to be extremely careful after that.

Noussair Mazraoui (7)

Exceptional and clearly one of the stronger performers under Amorim. Relentless all game and showed his versatility, switching sides with Diogo Dalot at half-time.

Manuel Ugarte (6)

Battled really well all game despite Arsenal dominating possession. Taken off for Tyrell Malacia at the start of extra time.

Kobbie Mainoo (6)

Alongside Ugarte, put in a good shift. Another United player who was booked in the second-half by Andy Madley and was replaced by Toby Collyer in the 80th minute.

Diogo Dalot (4)

Amorim switched him and Mazraoui around at half-time and it was costly. Within 15 minutes, Dalot picked up two silly bookings and was sent off. Arsenal equalised straight after.

Alejandro Garnacho (7)

Given the nod by Amorim with Amad Diallo not fully fit and was excellent. Picked out Bruno Fernandes for United’s goal and showed his defensive attributes with Dalot off.

Bruno Fernandes (7.5)

Booked for sarcastically taking his boot off in the first-half after he wasn’t awarded a foul but his finish for United’s goal was of the highest class. On his day, a special footballer.

Rasmus Hojlund (5)

Failed to get a sniff in his battle with the Arsenal centre-backs. Just the 16 touches before he was hooked off for Joshua Zirkzee late on in normal time.

Substitutions

Amad Diallo (7)

On for Garnacho in the 80th minute and was all-action as ever. Scored in the shoot-out.

Joshua Zirkzee (6.5)

Came on for Hojlund in the 80th minute and very nearly got the winner in extra time. Converted the winning penalty in style.

Toby Collyer (6.5)

Interestingly preferred over Casemiro, when he came on for Mainoo. Was impressive.

Tyrell Malacia (6)

Replaced Ugarte for extra time and put in a shift at left wing-back.

Leny Yoro (6.5)

Came on for Maguire in the 104th minute. Scored in the shoot-out.

UNUSED: Onana, Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony

Manager: Ruben Amorim (7)

Another weekend where he can take pride from his team’s performance. Made some key changes after Dalot’s red card as his side battled till the end. Another huge step in the right direction.

REFEREE

Andy Madley (3)

The perfect advert for VAR as he made a number of errors. Lost control of the game in the second-half and should not have given Arsenal a penalty.
