'I was very nervous but he put me at ease with his humour, fun and kindness. RIP.'

Peter announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer in February last year after being rushed to A&E with stomach cramps.

He underwent surgery just two days later to remove his colon and bowl and was fitted with a stoma bag, but insisted he was staying positive.

Informing his fans and friends on social media, he tweeted: 'Bit of news to share with my friends here. On January 9th I called into A&E at the University Hospital of North Durham with severe stomach cramps. I was admitted for tests resulting in a diagnosis of a flare up of colitis in my colon.

'On January 12th I was informed that biopsies collected along the inflamed area had revealed a presence of cancer.

'Two days later I underwent a nine hour procedure to remove my colon and bowel and, at this time, I am hopeful that the cancer has hopefully been caught early.

'I was discharged after three weeks and returned home last weekend where I continue to adjust to life with a stoma bag.

'Ahead lies a few weeks of recuperating and trying to regain my energy levels (right now simply getting dressed can wipe me out!)'

However, sadly just one month later he revealed that the cancer had come back, writing: 'UPDATE: I'm sorry to report that those pesky cancer cells have returned & I will be embarking on a chemo adventure in a few weeks'

Thanking the medical team, Peter gushed: 'I cannot fully express my gratitude to the fantastic surgical and medical staff without whom I would not be confident of enjoying a future with my family.

'This story could so easily have carried a different ending and I urge you to make the most of every day because you never know what lies around the next corner.'
