Idris Elba signs up to play the Hunchback of Notre Dame in new Netflix movie... which actor will also direct AND produce music for
Having first worked as a DJ before becoming an actor - and then unveiling his movie directing debut earlier this year - he's already proved that he's multifaceted.
But Idris Elba has announced that he has signed up for his most ambitious undertaking yet, as he'll star in, direct and produce a modern-day retelling of the classic 19th Century Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
The 45-year-old actor, who has often swatted away rumours that he's set to be next James Bond, will also produce original new music for the project, set to be aired on popular streaming service Netflix, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Big project: Idris Elba has signed up to star in, direct and produce a modern-day retelling of the classic 19th Century Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
The feature, which has been described as a 'sonic and musical experience', will see east London native Idris take on the titular role of Quasimodo, a hunchback who falls in love with charismatic dancer Esmeralda.
It was famously adapted into an animated film by Disney in the mid-'90s, featuring the voices of a host of stars, including Demi Moore, Jason Alexander and Kevin Kline.
Set in the 15th century, The Hunchback story was also directed by William Dieterle in 1939.
Charles Laughton played bellringer Quasimodo in the black and white screen version of the gothic novel.

Away from his busy career, Idris - who attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Royal Wedding on Saturday - is preparing to wed his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre, 29.
He popped the question to the Canadian model during a screening of his latest film Yardie at east London's Rio cinema in February.
The glamorous couple made their red carpet debut as a couple in September 2017 after seven months of dating.
Despite looking completely besotted with one another, Idris once claimed marriage was off the cards just six months ago after two divorces.
Love and marriage: The 45-year-old actor attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Royal Wedding, held at Windsor Castle, with his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre, 29, on Saturday
He told Essence magazine in July 2017: ‘Am I ever gonna get remarried? I don’t think so. Yeah, I don’t think so. Marriage is an institution of sorts. And I’ve done it. It’s not for everybody. It’s not my life’s calling.’
The director gave a rare glimmer into his private life when he confessed falling in love while making a movie was 'pretty special' in recent months.
He was filming The Mountain Between Us alongside Titanic's Kate Winslet in Canada when he found himself smitten with beauty queen Sabrina.
