'I don't regret a bit of that': Kelly Lynch says motherhood led her to reject Basic Instinct role that made Sharon Stone's career
Kelly Lynch says she has no regrets turning down what turned out to be a career-defining role for one of her peers.
The 58-year-old actress, speaking with People on Friday, opened up about her career as an actress and how being a mom impacted her decisions on which projects to take - or not.
Lynch said that she was offered the role in 1992's Basic Instinct role of Catherine Tramell, a gorgeous - and murderous - novelist who strikes up a sexy, dangerous relationship with an investigator (played by Michael Douglas) assigned to a killing she's linked to.
No regrets: Kelly Lynch, 58, told People she's never second-guessed her decision to pass on the role of Catherine Tramell in 1992's Basic Instinct. The beauty was seen earlier this month at an event in LA
But the blonde beauty - who gave birth to her daughter Shane in 1985 - ultimately chose parenthood over the racy role.
'As interesting and titillating as I thought that movie was, with a kid you just make different decisions,' Lynch told the magazine. 'But I don’t regret a bit of that.'
The gorgeous Minnesota native fell back on the advice of a Tinseltown legend in navigating her career decisions as her daughter grew up.
'Like Katharine Hepburn said, ‘You can be a wife, a mother or an actor, but you can only be two of the three.' That definitely happened,' she said.
Star-maker: Stone, seen here in the sexy early-90s mega-hit, went on to star in films such as Silver and Casino, the latter of which she received an Oscar nomination for
'I would just say no to things to be with Shane,' she said.
Lynch noted the fast start she got off to in her career, as she transitioned from modeling to acting in the 1980s.
After a spate of appearances on TV shows such as Miami Vice and The Equalizer, her career took off with huge parts in the late 80s movies Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise - 'It was one of those parts that models get because my audition was [donning] various bikinis,' she said; and Road House, featuring the late Patrick Swayze.
Then and now: Kelly was seen in this vintage shot (L) her daughter Shane uploaded to her social media; and at an event in Beverly Hills in 2013
Flawless features: The stunning actress is gearing up for a role on the David E. Kelley series Mr. Mercedes
'They were really, really fun,' she told the publication. 'To do your first two films with Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise, who are both - were, in Patrick’s case - really amazing sweet and kind, guys, I loved working with both of them.'
The veteran actress stars on the upcoming David E. Kelley series Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of a Stephen King thriller that casts her in an incestuous relationship with her son, played by actor Harry Treadaway.
She teased the series: 'When you first meet our characters you’re kind of horrified. But at the end of this story, you feel for both of those. You’ll see the humanity in both of us, even in our relationship.'
The show debuts August 9 at 8/7c on AT&T Audience Network.
