The BBC's Wolf Hall: The Mirror And The Light viewers were hooked on the show's latest episode as they watched Thomas Cromwell's continued downfall.
The historical drama follows Thomas, played by Mark Rylance, as he spends his final four years as King Henry VIII's political advisor.
But despite a somewhat grand and inspirational run through the ranks of parliament, Thomas suffered a tragic downfall after he failed in his attempt to arrange a marriage between King Henry and Anne of Cleves, a German princess.
He was arrested and executed on charges of treason and heresy by beheading - bringing a dramatic close to his career and life.
The 'Prince of Darkness' had a reputation for being a brutal, unforgiving enforcer to England's most tyrannical royal, King Henry VIII.
Despite his nickname, he was actually never a royal, but in fact, a lawyer and statesman who played a crucial role in the English Reformation and modernization of government while he was in office from April 1533 to June 1540.
