Tim Allen gives exciting Toy Story 5 update as he returns to role as Buzz Lightyear

Tim Allen is prepared to go 'to infinity and beyond' as Buzz Lightyear for Toy Story 5.

The 71-year-old actor, who along with Tom Hanks, has starred as part of an intrepid duo heading up a group of classic toys in four previous adventures, opened up about the project in an interview with Collider

'I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,' Allen told the publication. 'It’s really, really weird to get back in it.'

The actor kept mum about the plot of the highly anticipated animated adventure, but the outlet reported he would be voicing multiples of Buzz Lightyear for the project.

'It’s a very, very clever story,' he said of the script.

The original 1995 Toy Story was nominated for three Oscars and made more than $394.4 million worldwide.

Toy Story 2 banked $497.3 million, Toy Story 3 broke the billion dollar mark and Toy Story 4 pulled in some $1.07 billion globally.

However The Santa Clause veteran said, 'I don’t really believe it’s about the money,' when it comes to the motivation for another project.

'I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it.'

Allen explained that the story was the real motivator.

'Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks].' he said, ;It's really clever.'

As for getting back into character after more than five years, the actor admitted, 'It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz.'

As far as when fans can see the new adventure in theaters, Allen said, 'I think we're a year out..  I've gotten up to the third act.'

'We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times,' ahead of the projected 2026 release.

There have been many tender moments of friendship among Buzz and Woody, Hanks' character, but Allen said he was particularly touched by a scene in Toy Story 4 as Buzz and Woody were about to part ways.

'When I said, "To infinity," and Tom said, "And beyond," was so emotional for the two of us. We're real close friends, and I loved that,' the Emmy nominee said.

All four Toy Story films are available for streaming on Disney+.
