Enzo Maresca says ‘somebody has to be embarrassed’ after the refereeing decisions which have gone against Chelsea amid their five-game winless run in the Premier League.

In an apparent swipe at referees’ body the PGMOL, Maresca insisted his team deserve zero criticism. He even claimed the club had been informed by the refereeing body that they should have been awarded a penalty, believed to be a reference to their 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace when Tyrick Mitchell slid in on Pedro Neto without punishment.

Another controversial incident came when Bournemouth’s David Brooks was shown a yellow card for bringing down Marc Cucurella in the 2-2 draw last Tuesday, marking the first time in Premier League history that a referee had rejected a red-card review at his pitchside monitor.

Rivals accuse Chelsea of looking for calls to go in their favour, with Neto criticised for feigning injury before Harry Wilson scored in Fulham’s 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca responded: ‘If you ask me, against Southampton, it was a red card (for Jack Stephens pulling Cucurella’s hair). The other day, for me, against Bournemouth, it was a red card (for Brooks).

'They can say anything they want but in the end, we are not going to change a thing. They didn’t whistle for a penalty for us and then we got a mail apologising, saying it should have been a penalty. But we don’t need apologies.’

Mail Sport believes Maresca was hinting at the Neto-Mitchell clash at Selhurst Park, though PGMOL sources say no apology was issued to Chelsea.

Maresca added: ‘In the last game against Bournemouth, it was the first time in the Premier League that they say it was a red card and (referee Rob Jones) said it was a yellow card.

'Someone has to be embarrassed about these kind of things, but not us. I love my players, all of them.’

On Monday night against Wolves, Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez after all four missed training in the build-up.
